Position Description:

In the role of a Research Scientist I you will be working in our Obstetrics and Gynecology Department.

Purpose

Using spleen tissue, the life gift from the transplant organ donors, Chen Lab aims to reconstitute human immune response in vitro. The Chen Lab in the Department of OB/GYN and Center for Immunology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, is seeking a motivated Research Scientist to join the team.

Our unique platform enables us to test hundreds of different conditions in parallel and assess their impacts on human immune responses, such as antibody production. We routinely work with industry partners to exploit the translational potential of the spleen organoid screening system. Meanwhile, working with the Versiti Blood Research Institute, we are building up a spleen biobank to investigate populational diversity in immune response. We aim to leverage the systemic and causative understanding of human immune system to inform the rationale design of vaccine and immunotherapy.

Primary Functions

  • Process and bank human spleens distributed from the Organ Processing Organization (Versiti Blood Research Institute).
  • Maintain spleen organoid cultures
  • Perform screening using a laboratory robot.
  • Perform routine experiments and daily work timely and independently, including cellular and molecular biology experiments, fluorescence imaging studies, etc. Collect, analyze, and report experimental data with accurate records.
  • Conduct and supervise assigned duties, such as routine lab maintenance, preparation of lab solutions and reagents, monitoring compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations, ordering supply, and record keeping, protocol implementation, etc.
  • Develop new methodologies for lab procedures.
  • May oversee the work of laboratory personnel including training and development as well as daily work direction/delegation/prioritizing.


Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

  • Experience in immunology or high-throughput screening is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of cell biological, biochemistry and molecular biological techniques.
  • Complex problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, time management, and communication/writing skills.
