Production Scheduler needed for a contract to hire role in Sterling, VA

Job Description:

The successful candidate shall demonstrate their ability to effectively set up (baseline), manage, and adjust project schedules and execution based on availability of engineering and production labor resources, materials, and other variables to meet required delivery dates. The Production Scheduler develops schedules for contracts won and entering the execution phase and provides analysis for schedule and resource impacts due to proposed/ bid work (what-if scenarios). They apply labor estimates from finalized Basis of Estimate (BOE) templates, facility and tool availability, and contract data to establish initial schedules. The scheduler works closely with numerous stakeholders including the Materials Planning Team, Production Manager, Task Leads, Engineering Manager, and Program Managers to obtain and coordinate detailed inputs including constraints and risks to improve schedule fidelity.

This role supports the Portfolio Execution Team in establishing and managing execution of development projects, production projects, and matrixed resources across functional departments. The Scheduler optimize the schedule inputs to drive efficiencies and ensure the highest probability of meeting contractual deadlines while minimizing excess cash expenditures such as schedule crashing and overtime. The Scheduler will provide their schedule assessment, associated outputs (risks, changes, constraints, and issues), and areas they require input or assistance, during the Sterling weekly Production Meeting. These outputs provide the Sterling Management Team with a useful tool to guide decisions on work prioritization and to strategically categorize new opportunities.

The Scheduler will collect results and team performance against the schedule and provide details as a key performance indicator (KPI) to evaluate schedule management effectiveness, and to foster future improvements. The Scheduler role and activities is critical to successful project execution in the areas of technical, cost, schedule, and risk management.

The scope of this position may later be expanded to include development and tracking of project soft deliverables including CDRLs, procedures, reports, manuals, and other documents.


  • Duties include but may not be limited to the tasks listed below as primary responsibilities.
  • Develop comprehensive production and design schedule overlays by identifying and collecting relevant data, entering estimates and firm delivery requirements, tracking / reporting / resolving issues, communicating status, and optimizing resources, and ensuring on-time delivery to the customer.
  • Utilize ERP/ MRP system data, BOEs, and team inputs to refine schedule prior to baselining.
  • Support the Portfolio Execution Team to ensure project requirements and milestones are documented, resource constraints and risks identified, and that the schedule is updated in real time as new information received.
  • Evaluate materials schedules and coordinate procurements and expediting needs to meet production schedules.
  • Develop resource plans for project execution and production
  • Plan, track, and recommend staff assignments to ensure the schedule is maintained
  • Evaluate hours and/or cost expenditures against plan to ensure financial performance it achieved
  • Establish project metrics; collect and analyze data, report results to PM, and work with QA to initiate corrective or preventative actions A/R
  • Identify, document, track, and update project risks
  • Document lessons-learned for future project scheduling benefits


Basic Qualifications

  • Three (3) years' direct scheduling experience
  • Experience scheduling activities in a production environment
  • Practical experience and strong understanding of hardware production processes and systems
  • Intermediate or better skillset with Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
  • Practical understanding of hardware Bill of Materials (BOMs)
  • Understanding of production projects.
