Summary of Position

Lab Assistant I is responsible for supporting the Neuro department with all clerical and ancillary duties, keeping all equipment ready to run, reagents prepared and inventory available for patient output. This position works under the direction of the Supervisor and follows standard Laboratory procedures and policies

Key Job Elements



  • Perform staining, dehydration and coverslipping of slides utilizing manual or automatic systems. Loads/unloads stainers.
  • Prepare, clean, sterilize, maintain, and shut down Laboratory equipment, accessories, and instruments.
  • Responsible for filing, tracking and retrieval and accurate record keeping of documents, specimens and slides.
  • Maintain diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensure correct patient labeling of all materials.
  • Routinely check and verify that case accession numbers match the blocks and slides, print slide and specimen labels as appropriate.
  • Labware cleaning.
  • Laboratory Inventory management
  • Handle hazardous/medical waste collection with proper preparations for disposal
  • Reagent preparation and aliquoting of solutions
  • Specimen storage management and specimen send-out coordination
  • Accurate data entry of patient and lab data into the laboratory information system
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor



Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience



  • High school diploma or equivalent required. An associate or bachelor's degree in biological sciences is a plus.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Schedule flexibility- required to work overtime when needed.
  • Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to transcribe information from documents (physical and digital) into various computer systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in a Team environment.
  • Flexible enough to adapt to the changing needs of the lab.
  • Ability to anticipate and react to potential complications in the lab.
  • Independent judgement for troubleshooting issues.






Lab Specific Qualifications



  • Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
  • Ability to tolerate extensive periods seated and/or standing.
  • Must possess the ability to perform repetitive motions
  • Ability to lift weights up to 30 pounds.
  • May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
  • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens (human specimens, tissues, and bodily fluid.)
  • EHS certification or training
