Job Summary

The Ernst Lab (Division of Experimental Medicine) seeks a highly motivated Staff Research Associate III (SRA III) to work as a semi-independent critical contributor to a research team investigating mechanisms of immunity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, especially antigen-specific human T cell responses. The position requires expertise in BSL2 biosafety, human sample handling and harvest techniques, aseptic technique, and cellular and molecular immunology techniques including primary cell isolation, spectral flow cytometry, and functional cell assays, as well as recombinant DNA technologies. Perform established assays, evaluate the results, and assemble the data in publication-ready formats, with general guidance and oversight. Coordinate all studies by being responsible for monitoring inventory of critical reagents and supplies and for ordering unique reagents and supplies. Coordinate all aspects of incoming human sample shipments from domestic and international collaborators, including maintenance of CDC import permits, Biological Use Authorizations. Coordinate all regular and ad hoc meetings with collaborating investigators, including those at international sites, and funding agency administrators. Train and oversee the bench work of student trainees and visiting scientists.

Duties will include standard and repetitive technical laboratory procedures. The job will involve the ability to stand and walk for extended period during the work hours which is necessary to perform lab duties.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $30.89 - $49.68 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Division of Experimental Medicine is a translational, wet lab research unit comprised of 8 research groups consisting of 10 faculty members and 75+ staff, trainees, and post-docs. Our labs use cutting edge technologies to address impactful questions about host-pathogen interactions in globally devastating infectious diseases, including HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and SARS-CoV-2.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS with a degree in a related science and two or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Documented experience with human immunology experimental procedures, including establishment, characterization, and maintenance of human T cell lines.
  • Knowledge of various procedures and laboratory techniques, such as: BSL2 biosafety, microscopy, sterile procedure, cell culture, immunology techniques (spectral flow cytometry, flow sorting, ELISA, ELISPOT), recombinant DNA techniques, reagent preparation, protein analysis by immunoblot, RNA isolation and qRT-PCR, and single cell RNA and TCR sequencing
  • Proficiency in various computer programs and proven ability to quickly learn and optimize new programs
  • Experience in shipping and handling of biohazard agents
  • Ability to adapt and use good judgment when making decisions
  • Ability to work with, and train staff of wide range of educational backgrounds
  • Ability to prioritize work and delegate responsibility and tasks appropriately.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Minimum two years' post-graduation laboratory research experience in human T cell immunology
  • Experience in biocontainment (Biosafety Level 3) facility
