Job Description:
The PMA Underwriting Associate Program is designed to give participants the business and technical skills required to build a successful career in the insurance industry. As a member of PMA's Specialty Insurance Division, you will be trained by our experienced captive underwriting team and introduced to the Underwriting function through on-the-job learning, interactive classroom instruction, job shadowing and directed self-study. You will be given the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and talents to help you reach your Underwriting career goals. Responsibilities:
- Build basic-level knowledge of workers compensation, general liability, and automobile insurance products/coverage, underwriting, pricing, risk selection, finance, and actuarial concepts; Gain exposure to alternative risk financing mechanisms, including captives, retros, and loss sensitive arrangements.
- Underwrite new and renewal commercial casualty business, utilizing risk selection and pricing tools, while ensuring compliance with underwriting guidelines, rating manual rules, and applicable insurance laws and regulations.
- Participate in virtual, in-person classroom, and self-directed study; External training courses, conferences, and seminars sponsored by professional organizations or associations are designed for professional career enhancement.
- Develop skills in marketing, decision making, problem solving, planning and organizing. Learn through personalized assignments to help gain broader understanding of underwriting commercial insurance and the distribution channels.
- Demonstrate commitment to Company's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, and apply knowledge of compliance policies and procedures, standards and laws applicable to job responsibilities in the performance of work.
Requirements:
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree with a strong GPA in many majors will be considered.
- Strong critical thinking skills that demonstrate analysis, judgment and sound decision making.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness to use effective sales and negotiation techniques and mathematical expertise within the underwriting function.
- Ability to work both independently as well as within a team-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Risk Management, Math, Business or Economics majors are preferred, but not required.
- Prior corporate internship experience, full or part-time work experience, or exposure to the insurance industry (claims/underwriting) is a plus.
- Demonstrated relationship building, analytical skills and leadership experience through work or involvement in community service, athletics, clubs, or other interests preferred.
