Provides thought and day-to-day leadership for a complex property underwriting business unit. Creates, maintains, and manages an underwriting service strategy that exceeds expectations for our Retail & Wholesale distribution partners. Provides expertise and mentorship to direct reports in risk selection, acting as a technical resource for complex and/or E&S risks. Effectively coaches & mentors underwriting team on broker communication & soft skills. Analyzes data and reports to monitor and manage underwriting workload. Works cross functionally to ensure that the HSB's High Service Value Proposition is delivered on both the account & agency level. Ensures that all business is underwritten in accordance with company underwriting policy and procedure.

Leverage own understanding of highly protected property, deep understanding of engineering teams, and underwriting knowledge of common terms and conditions in shared and layered markets as needed to profitably grow the book. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement strategies for large complex property accounts including market facing and engaging with retail and wholesale distribution partners. Ensure that all business is underwritten in accordance with company underwriting policy and procedure including developing and maintaining internal quality program. Develop and implement pricing strategies for large complex property risks, taking into account market conditions, risk factors, and business objectives. Collaborate with actuarial and pricing teams to develop and refine pricing models for large complex property risks. Stay up to date with market trends and competitor activity, adjusting pricing and underwriting strategies as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • College degree or equivalent combination of educational and work experience is required.
  • Completion of advanced insurance designations is desired.
  • 5+ years of experience in underwriting complex property risks, including quota share and excess agreements is required.
  • 2+ years of Team Leader, Supervisory or Management experience in a functional role preferred.
  • Existing underwriting relationships in large national brokers or wholesalers preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in underwriting complex commercial property risks, including experience in pricing and setting terms and conditions
  • Proven track record of success in negotiating pricing and terms with brokers and clients
  • Understanding of pricing models with the ability to apply to large complex property risks
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, including actuarial, pricing, and underwriting teams
