SUMMARY

This person will be present on site to assist with maintenance, security and educational site needs. Primary responsibilities will include overseeing county vendors/contractors, performing some hands-on maintenance and housekeeping for the historic house and grounds, and researching/developing/leading educational programming regarding the Canal. This person will coordinate schedules for the property and be involved in long term planning. This person will learn operations of the Canal Lock and assist with operations as needed.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Operates equipment as needed, i.e., string trimmers, computers, etc.
* Maintains site calendars including those for meetings, training, tours and other significant site events. Coordinates and oversees vendors/contractors on site.
* Develops, implements and conducts site specific programs.
* Conducts daily guided tours and learns/assists with lock operations.
* Conducts research to ensure the quality and accuracy of site interpretation.
* Interfaces with the Schuylkill Canal Association on a regular basis to ensure smooth site operations and good communication with Montgomery County.
*Provides for security of the site and works with park ranger staff to ensure site safety.
* Assists in aspects of landscape maintenance including trimming, planting, pruning, mulching and trash pick-up and disposal.
* Performs routine inspections of all facilities noting needed repairs; ensuring sites are safe for public use and assists with long range planning for the site.
* Must follow all directed County safety procedures.
* Assists with natural resource management projects as appropriate.
* May perform minor painting and carpentry tasks.
* Coordinates and monitors volunteers and community service personnel as appropriate.
* Performs some snow removal.
* Assists in all aspects of building maintenance which could include cleaning restrooms and offices.
* Required to take training as assigned.
* Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

* Must have at least two years of experience in similar work, educational background preferred.
* Minimum of a high school diploma or GED, bachelor in related field preferred.
* Some experience in building, construction or grounds/landscape maintenance and associated equipment required.
* Must have ability to work in public areas in a safe manner.
* Must have competent computer skills.
* Expected to participate in appropriate organizations and affiliations related to the field.
* Must successfully pass PA State Police Criminal Record Check.
* Must project a pleasant and professional presence when interacting with the public.
* Ability to read/write/speak English.
* Ability to communicate effectively.
* Must possess a valid Driver's License, a satisfactory driving record and the ability to maintain one throughout employment.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

* Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn when applicable.
* Have the ability to climb, stoop, bend, reach, walk, sit or stand for long periods of time.
* Must be able to lift and use various pieces of hand held equipment, up to twenty (20) pounds, for prolonged periods of time.
* Must be able to at least lift up to fifty (50) pounds (repeatedly).

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

This position will be in the field. The Site Caretaker/Educator may experience the following:

* Occasional exposure to chemicals, hazardous vegetation (poison ivy, etc.) and other hazards (animals, bees, etc.) when performing their responsibilities.
* Exposure to inclement weather, extreme heat, cold, snow, ice and rain.
* Will work at various sites as assigned.
* Required to work weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.
* Be available for emergencies outside of normal working hours.
* Appropriate dress and protective footwear required.
* The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
