What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are currently hiring R&D Graduate Interns to join our Reactor Design Team in year-round internship positions!

Qualified candidates will participate with the Reactor Design team on the CREST (Combined Radiation Environments for Survivability Testing) Project under the Technical Internships program. The primary work focus will be on modeling and other special projects in support of long-range plans for the CREST reactor systems.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Support the CREST reactor design team by performing analyses or modeling (e.g., MCNP) and then documenting your results.

  • Provide engineering expertise on other relevant reactor or nuclear engineering activities on an as-needed basis.

  • Participate in project status meetings and collaborate with other design teams working on the CREST Project and their industrial business partners.

  • Cooperate with CREST industrial business partners and other subcontractors.

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



  • Earned bachelor's degree

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship



Qualifications We Desire:



  • A Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or other closely related field.

  • Experience with radiation transport codes.

  • Ability to work both independently and within a multi-disciplinary team environment, building consensus and resolving issues.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills, including excellent communication skills with the ability to prepare clearly written technical reports and briefings.

  • Experience defining and solving challenging, complex problems in a timely manner.

About Our Team:

The CREST Reactor Facility Development Group (1391) is responsible for designing and developing the research reactor, the pulsed power electron/gamma-ray accelerator, and the systems engineering needed to integrate these into the CREST facility. CREST is intended to provide a safe, purpose-built gamma and neutron radiation environment test facility for stockpile qualification and numerous other research and development activities. Overall, the CREST complex will include new research reactor infrastructure for the Annular Core Research Reactor, a gamma accelerator, new and improved nuclear material storage, handling, and processing space, as well as associated metrology, laboratory space, offices, and other required infrastructure. CREST will be a flexible, multi-program complex anticipated to take the forefront of combined radiation environment test and simulation capabilities development.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
