What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your work and eager to join a dynamic team that tackles challenging issues for our nation's security? The Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection (RP) organization is seeking an experienced Health Physicist to join our Radiological Operations team #6 (ORG 04616). This role supports critical National and Global Security Missions, including Threat Assessment, WMD Counterterrorism and Response, and Global Nuclear Security.

As a Health Physicist, you will provide technical and leadership support to Radiological Control Technologists (RCTs) and Radiological Engineers within your team. You will work closely with RP customers to implement and apply all RP services effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist Radiation Protection customer support teams and individual line organizations in implementing operational aspects of corporate Radiation Protection requirements.

• Recommend appropriate controls and develop and implement radiological monitoring protocols in accordance with DOE regulations, orders, and SNL policy.

• Perform radiological hazard evaluations and design radiological protection safety programs.

• Review customer-owned Safety Basis and Radiological Technical Work Documents (RTWDs, also known as TWDs or OPs) in the functional space.

• Assess program effectiveness and line implementation of requirements.

• Assist with incident response, review, analysis, and reporting.

• Develop corrective action plans and lessons learned.

• Provide oversight and mentorship to radiological control technicians (RCTs) and other Health Physicists.

• Respond to and direct others in incident and emergency response situations.

• Participate in and support internal and external RP audits and assessments as needed.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

A valid driver's license and access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work locations is required.

Work is fast-paced, and assignments may change frequently in response to customer and RP organization needs. Some travel may be required. Activities include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.

Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

• Requires a bachelor's degree in health physics, Nuclear Engineering, or similar appropriate Physical Science and, plus (5) years of relevant experience.

• Working knowledge of 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20.

• Current computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

Qualifications We Desire:

• An ABET-accredited master's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or similar appropriate physical science and (5) plus years of operational Health Physics work experience.

• Experience providing dedicated operational health physics project management and guidance to line Customers within the SNL functional mission spaces.

• Experience providing dedicated operational health physics support and guidance in the area of radiation-generating device (RGD) operations.

• Proven track-record of excellent organizational and individual leadership skills with the ability to effectively work with and direct other health physicists and RCTs.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.

• Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and flexibility.

• Ability to work effectively independently, and in team situations in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.

• Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, moving from program to operational work seamlessly between varying types of radiological concerns (e.g., nuclear facilities, waste management, accelerators, bench-scale R&D, etc.) quickly and effectively.

• Proven track-record of independently developing solutions to and leading a team in solving specific problems related to issues of moderate to high complexity and impact.

• Ability to provide expert analysis of situations to make recommendations to management on changes to policies, processes, or methods.

• Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification.

• Experience working in a fast-paced research and development environment.

• Experience working in an operational DOE health physics program.

• Experience continuously improving a radiological protection program, including implementation of new radiological controls best practices.

• Experience working in an operational environment such as DOE or NRC facilities or Naval Reactors.

• Active DOE "L" or" Q" level security clearance.

About Our Team:

The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection radiological work planning and execution services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.
