Duties and Responsibilities
The Operating Engineer will be under the direct supervision of the Chief and Assistant Chief Engineers. Duties include, but not limited to operating or assisting in the operation of:

  • all HVAC equipment
  • motors, turbines, combustion engines, and pumps
  • air compressors
  • ice/refrigeration equipment
  • chillers (centrifugal, screw & reciprocating)
  • hot water boilers
  • low pressure steam boiler
  • elevators
  • fire suppression systems

  • ADA equipment
  • building automation systems (BAS)
  • may at times be needed to assist with snow removal
  • other duties as assigned

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

  • High School Diploma, Trade School or GED graduate and three years of related experience.
  • Member of Local 399 Operating Engineers Union or enrollment in said union within 90 days of accepting position as operating engineer.
  • Licenses: City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and interpret MEPFP as-built drawings
  • Ability to use tools of the trade
  • Ability to work in high and/or confined space
  • Ability to carry materials to perform work functions
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must supply their own hand tools
  • Must be in good physical condition with the ability to assist with snow removal and other labor-intensive requests
  • Must be able to work irregular hours if needed to perform job requirements
  • Must be able to work successfully with other trades to perform job duties

Certificates/Credentials/Licenses

  • City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License
  • Must be in good standing with IUOE Local 399
  • Must have a valid driver's license in good standing, and maintain the license while employed as an operating engineer

Computer Skills

  • proficient in the operation of building automation systems
  • advanced user of Microsoft office software
  • advanced user of computerized maintenance management software
