Acting under the general direction of the Executive Director of Nursing Professional Practice, the Director of Nursing Education provides direction and oversight to two significant nursing education functions: the orientation of newly hired nursing staff and the education of nurses that occurs within the specialty divisions. Within the orientation function, the Director directs the program to ensure initial competency development and regulatory requirements are met. After the orientation program, the Director directs the specialty education program where nurses develop ongoing competencies and receive ongoing training and education consistent with organizational priorities. Together, the Director integrates the programs of orientation and specialty education into a seamless, continuous nursing education program. This program ensures that nurses at all levels of professional development (such as from novice to expert) receive high quality, evidence-based, engaging education programs. The Director is responsible for translating the conduction of these programs into qualified outcomes within the nursing division. In partnership with the Chief Nursing Officers, nurse executives, and other key stakeholders, this position is responsible for the evaluation of the nursing education program from all perspectives, including but not limited to quality of education, improvement in patient care outcomes, cost effectiveness, use of technology, among other aspects relevant to the evaluation. The Director is expected to function with a high level of independence to execute the nursing education program across Yale New Haven Health System.

Responsibilities

Provide direction to leaders in specialty professional development and the ANCC Magnet teams across YNHHS 1 .2 Integrate specialty professional development into a seamless, effective continuum to support nurses' professional development across all phases of professional competency and experience (such as novice to expert) 1 .3 Ensure the establishment of clear performance standards within the nursing professional practice division in alignment with nursing best practices. 1 .4 Ensure on-going monitoring of programmatic performance for Magnet and nursing education. Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding the strategic change required to respond to quality nursing practice and outcomes. 1 .5 Collaborate with key members of the multidisciplinary team to lead care transformation and innovative across YNHHS. 1 .6 Enable a culture of "systemness" by developing structures and processes that support nursing professional excellence. 1 .7 - Creates structures and processes to foster an environment that supports a Magnet
environment for nurses and their continuous professional development. 1 .8 Increase the visibility and reputation of nurses nationally and internationally through leading the coordination and dissemination of evidence-based and best practices approaches to nursing professional development. 1 .9 Creation of an environment and infrastructure that supports professional growth activities that affect development and implementation of innovative nursing practice; the recruitment and retention of nurses; and implementation of a program of nursing professional development and education. 1 .10 Leads project execution of the ANCC Magnet designation and re-designation strategy to support Magnet enculturation across YNHHS 1 .11 2. Fiscal Management: Ensures that resources are prioritized and in place (i.e. staff, facilities, equipment, supplies, technology, information, systems and processes, etc.) and properly utilized to achieve objectives through the most effective and efficient operations. 2 .1 Develops and presents comprehensive analysis for financial and programmatic recommendations for nursing professional development and Magnet initiatives. 2 .2 Monitors financial performance. Evaluates and approves recommendations regarding change required to achieve established financial objectives. 2 .3 Articulates and communicates the rationale for financial decisions ensuring a high level of understanding among stakeholders across the health system. 2 .4 Continually evaluates delivery modalities of nursing professional development and Magnet resource, balancing financial objectives and quality of programming. 2 .5 In collaboration with the quality department and interprofessional partners, identifies trends in nursing practice and responds to positively impact the delivery of cost-effective, quality patient care. 2 .6 3. Human Resource Management: Creates vision and provides leadership in a collaborative, matrix environment that offers job satisfaction and recognition and that stimulates innovative thinking and cross functional teamwork to accomplish objectives. 3 .1 Clearly establishes expectations for high levels of performance, oversees the monitoring of standards of performance excellence, evaluates and approves recommendations regarding change and holds management accountable for achieving established standards. 3 .2 Ensures the effective integration of progressive change through visible and active support of staff as well as demonstrating open communication techniques. 3 .3 Ensures that all management and staff understand their roles in accomplishing divisional and strategic objectives. 3 .4 Ensures that leaders and professionals with the Education and Magnet divisions are developed mentored and coached; have access to continuing education and development; and have opportunities to growth. -
Qualifications
EDUCATION Minimum degree in nursing (baccalaureate or graduate). Graduate degree required which may be in a related field if the undergraduate is in nursing. Doctoral degree preferred. EXPERIENCE Minimum 8 years of progressive experience; previous experience in system -wide leadership role preferred. Experience in nursing professional development and ANCC Magnet program preferred . LICENSURE Current CT RN license. SPECIAL SKILLS Excellent administrative, managerial, technical, fiscal and negotiation skills. Must have excellent communication and organizational skills in a complex system environment Membership and participation in professional nursing organizations required. Demonstrated ability in relating to and communicating with people effectively. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Understanding of nursing professional development using adult learning theory. PHYSICAL DEMAND This role supports nursing education throughout the health system. Travel to YNHHS entities as needed to facilitate professional development activities of nurses within YNHHS. ACCOUNTABILITY Responsible for the development, interpretation and application of budgets and business and strategic planning related to nursing professional practice. Provides leadership and direction to direct reports and ensures best practices in alignment with market trends relative to the planning and delivery of a complex, system-wide nursing professional development program and the ANCC Magnet program.
