Summary of Job Duties:I am seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a full-time, Fisheries Field Technician position for the summer to assist UAPB graduate students in two studies. The technician will be employed for three months, May 16th- August 15th, 2025. The position pays $15.00/hour and is full-time (40 hours/week). Most of the work needed is for 1) an ACEP-WRE wetlands study in the Delta region of Arkansas; and 2) a portion of the technician's time will be dedicated to a diet study on Brown Trout in the Greer's Ferry Tailwater (GRTW) on the Little Red River (LRR) Arkansas.
For study one, the Technician will be expected to assist a graduate student during the late spring and summer of 2025 in sampling fish in select constructed and natural wetlands in the Delta region of Arkansas as a part of a larger study assessing the ACEP-WRE wetlands throughout the Mississippi River Basin. Sampling includes backpack electrofishing, seining, and overnight deployment of mini fyke nets. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife bunkhouse near the field sites is utilized because overnight stays during fieldwork are required.
For study two, our goal is to compare Brown Trout stomach contents to available to assess slow trout growth. Duties include assisting a graduate student with monthly macroinvertebrate and sculpin field sampling to assess the Brown Trout foraging base in the GFTW. Fieldwork involves riding in a vessel on the LRR, while utilizing a variety of nets and trap types including minnow traps, stream drift nets, vegetation bag and Serber samplers. Additional duties for this study include quarterly Brown Trout stomach collection sampling via gastric lavage. When the research specialist is not in the field they are expected to process samples, by sorting, identifying, enumerating, and measuring prey items from environmental and stomach-content samples in a laboratory setting under a dissecting microscope. Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Proof of current CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to receive both before employment), completion of a boater's education course, and a valid driver's license with good record. The applicant must also be able to lift 40 lbs. and can withstand inclement weather conditions including humid temperatures above 90 F and close to freezing temperatures.

Desired Qualifications: These include the completion of, or progress toward completing, a B.S. degree in Fisheries Science, Biology, or a related field; fisheries field sampling experience including towing, trailering, and driving vessels, as well as driving 4-wheelers and field trucks; and macroinvertebrate identification. The ability to operate a narrow vessel with tiller outboard motor in tailwater rivers is highly desirable.
