The CFO for Optum Financial s is a business leader for a high-growth, complex segment of UnitedHealth Group and Optum. The Optum Financial leader plays a critical role in supporting the business growth and profitability initiatives.

The CFO for Optum Financial is a key senior level position responsible for driving growth, financial performance, strategic initiatives, business development and other key business priorities. The CFO for Optum Financial is responsible for the areas of consolidated financial planning and analysis including consolidated revenue, operating expenses (cost analysis and cost metric reporting) and earnings; strategic planning activities and other corporate activities including quarterly earnings, monthly business reporting, Board of Director reporting, investor conference activities etc. This position provides strategic finance leadership including partnering with the division and operations finance leaders, controllers, strategy, and product leaders as well as corporate shared service leaders to help drive the overall financial and business activities for the Optum Financial business.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • As a member of the leadership team, the CFO is accountable for business results and performance, working in partnership with the CEO and Optum Financial leaders
  • Key strategic leader driving organic growth, new business and inorganic initiatives. Relentless focus on driving growth while balancing cost efficiencies throughout the organization
  • Serve as Finance lead for M&A activity including input on transaction structure, valuation, diligence and integration (and a member of the acquisition approval committee)
  • Drive key performance indicators and MBOS across multiple P&Ls and leaders. Optimize performance based on different P&L and balance sheet drivers (banking and lending activities)
  • Manage the consolidated financial budgeting, forecasting, annual plan cycles including appropriate reporting and analytics regarding consolidated financials
  • Manage consolidated reporting and analysis requirements including monthly results, Monthly Business reviews, Board of Director presentations, Earnings release preparation and support, investor
  • conference / investor meeting support and numerous ad hoc reporting requests
  • Provide information and analysis around competitive environment including analyst consensus information, competitive scan reporting etc.
  • Support strategic decision making through an in-depth understanding of UnitedHealth Group, Optum and all competitors, industry trends, market dynamics and internal key indicators
  • Drive the strategic planning process across the organization in conjunction with Strategy, Product and Business leaders
  • Work with business and finance leaders to drive operational improvement and cost containment efforts
  • Partner with the business finance leaders to generate forecasts and provide support on trend analysis and other cost analysis activities; provide insights / reporting to ensure appropriate cost structures
  • and targets are in place to drive desired business results
  • Drive the development of key cost analysis metrics to understand and track appropriate cost structures, productivity and translate those into financial levers
  • Develop solid relationships by proactively meeting with key leaders within finance and across the business
  • Provide exceptional team leadership with a focus on employee engagement, development, retention, and attracting top talent into the organization
  • Proactively monitor trends to identify risks and opportunities across key expense categories

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting
  • 15 or more years of financial management experience
  • 10 or more years of experience in a leadership role
  • Experience leading financial activities for large business unit
  • Experience in the financial industry (payments, insurance, banking, or healthcare)
  • Experience in balance sheet management and forecasting for our Banking and lending segment
  • Solid business and financial acumen. Ability to anticipate planning, forecasting, and operational issues; determine the impact, and develop and implement an appropriate action plan
  • Solid ability to communicate effectively and efficiently at multiple levels of large, complex organizations. Must be able be to lead, manage and inspire people at all levels within the organization
  • Solid organizational, management, administrative and human relations skills, and a style which exhibits emotional maturity, leadership, collaboration and teamwork
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex business problems and solid analytical skills with ability to drive transformational, consumer - centric change and manage long - term programs
  • Solid history of quickly building relationships, gaining credibility and partnering with business leaders. Must excel at building teams and collaborating across multiple distinct business groups
  • Located in Eden Prairie, MN or New York City, NY
  • 25% travel


Preferred Qualifications:



  • MBA, CPA, or CFA
  • Healthcare experience
