Job Summary

The Parks and Community Services (PCS) High School Intern position is designed to provide Kirkland youth with education, job skills, and career development training in the ?eld of PCS.

This is a summer position that will focus on recreation, administration and human services. The internship program facilitates youth development through on-the-job work experience and career development training to instill strong self-esteem, good work habits, and connection to the community.

Interns will spend their time assisting with activities and tasks such as outdoor programs, leading games, conducting research, photo/video editing, creating promotional materials, and more.

Hours of Work or Program Hours

Interns will generally work 10-20 hours per week, with the potential for more hours, not exceed 40 hours per week.

Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE:

By assisting Parks and Community Services (PCS) Department staff in the performance of their duties, the PCS High School Intern is given the opportunity to learn about PCS professions and the functions and activities of the PCS department.

Assignment areas may include work in various divisions including Recreation, Parks Management (including Green Kirkland Partnership), Administration and Human Services.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Assists with a variety of current and long-range PCS projects and tasks.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists PCS department staff on short- and long-term projects and tasks.
  2. Contributes to the creation of documentation related to PCS projects.
  3. Assists with research, data collection, mapping, inventory, etc. related to various PCS projects.
  4. Assists in developing public outreach materials.
  5. Provides general support at meetings, events and programs, such as set-up and take-down, preparation of materials and equipment, shadowing and assisting staff, and providing customer service.
  6. Greets and assists participants and the public.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Ability to communicate clearly by phone, using Teams/Zoom and other virtual tools, in- person, and in writing
  2. Ability to organize and prioritize workload, with assistance from PCS staff
  3. Interest in Parks and Recreation
  4. Familiarity with standard computer software, e.g. Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel and Outlook
  5. Ability to courteously interact with the public to acknowledge both compliments and complaints.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be between 14 and 18 years of age on start date.
  2. Must be a student enrolled in an educational program.
  3. Must be able to work as a team member to accomplish a common goal.
  4. Must be able to push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  5. If offered the job, must successfully complete a criminal history back ground check.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Assignments may involve field work, which includes uneven terrains and sometimes adverse weather conditions, and desk work, which may be interrupted with phone calls and running errands. Desk work is done at a computer terminal.

Definition of Contingent

This position is defined as a non-benefitted contingent position, and is subject to rules defining contingent positions, including, but not limited to at-will employment and a cap on the total hours worked by the employee in a rolling 12-month period. This position is eligible for sick leave after 90 days of employment and is also eligible for overtime per FLSA.
