Essential Job Duties
The Advising Team, within the Study Abroad Office, is student-facing and advises students for all study abroad programs. Programmatically, the team oversees semester and academic year exchange programs, programs through our affiliates and third-party service providers, independent research and internships abroad and summer partner programs. The team's goals are to promote our study abroad programs, facilitate student learning and development, support all NC Students to study abroad, and continually work towards integrating study abroad with the NC State curriculum.
Advising (60%)
Serve as the study abroad advisor for students within select colleges (currently the College of Design, the College of Education and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences). Engage in advising practices that align with University and education abroad best practices, utilizing campus and industry resources. Empower students to prepare for their study abroad experience through reflection and goal setting. Advise students on program selection and application process. Discuss with students curricular fit, academic credits, program types, eligibility, financial aid, and scholarships. Collaborate with academic advisors within the colleges to gain a thorough understanding of the degree programs and their requirements and become familiar with all study abroad programs in all regions of the world that could satisfy those requirements. Partner with colleges and departments as well as our international exchange partners to continually pre-approve courses from our exchange partner institutions. Manage the complete program application and acceptance process for a designated group of outgoing students in consultation with the Assistant Director for Advising. Provide post-decision semester advising to students in a select regional portfolio (currently students studying abroad within the UK, Ireland and Central Europe), including nominations to partner institutions, visa application support, and delivering pre-departure orientations in coordination with the advising team.
This position is expected to maintain the confidentiality of communications and files and protect student privacy according to federal law and institutional policies.
Program Management (10%)
For exchange and select direct-enroll partner programs in the UK, Ireland, and Central Europe, serve as the lead contact. Manage exchange agreements for designated regions, including periodic program assessment, facilitating renewals and reviewing new agreements, as well as maintaining the balance of enrollment numbers. Research programs and communicate with colleagues at partner institutions and program providers in the United States and abroad regarding academic opportunities, costs, housing options, support services, and agreements. Monitor student demand for programs within the college and geographic region. Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Advising, help assess existing exchange and direct enroll programs and identify new programs, as needed, to ensure a diverse portfolio of programs that meet the needs of students and designated colleges. Create a portfolio of specific affiliate programs that complement the academic and regional portfolio.
Global Responsibilities (30%)
Coordinate pre-departure orientations, videos, and conferences for all outgoing students, including planning, content oversight, arranging speakers as needed, and preparing all materials. Develop and coordinate Study Abroad Office re-entry programming. Partner with campus stakeholders (Career Development Center, Center for Student Leadership and Engagement, Global Training Initiative, etc) on re-entry activities. Maintain and revise, as needed, outgoing student handbooks in print and online. In conjunction with other Study Abroad Office staff, assist with pre-departure orientation programs for incoming international exchange students, office-wide marketing events, and other duties as needed. All advisors will provide backup support to front desk operations as needed. In conjunction with other Study Abroad Office staff, advisors will assist with pre-departure orientation programs for outgoing and incoming students, workshops for program faculty directors, and office-wide marketing events. Represent NC State and the Study Abroad Office at state, regional, and/or national conferences, as needed.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of professional experience in international education, advising, or student services.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to demonstrate a basic understanding of study abroad programs and university degree requirements; experience in student or academic advising; experience studying, living, and/or working abroad, or engagement in other relevant intercultural contexts.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and computer proficiency.
  • Ability to plan ahead and manage multiple priorities and tasks.
  • Skilled in resourceful problem-solving and propositional thinking.
  • Must be willing to work occasional evenings and/or weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • Previous experience working in a study abroad office or on a university campus is strongly preferred.
  • Experience advising and supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience using Terra Dotta for Study Abroad software.
  • Ability to thrive in a demanding work environment, prioritize workload, and adapt to changing demands and priorities.
  • Possess attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and willingness and interest in always seeking to improve upon processes and practices.
  • Demonstrate previous successful experience working in a team-oriented environment.
  • The ideal candidate will exhibit empathy and enthusiasm in interactions with students and possess a high level of professionalism in their interactions with all.
