UNM Medical Group, Inc. is hiring for a Senior Genetic Counselor: for the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. This opportunity is a full time position located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Minimum $83,283 - Midpoint $106,121*

*Salary is determined based on years of total relevant experience.

*Salary is based on 1.0 FTE (full time equivalent) or 40 hours per week. Less than 40 hours/week will be prorated and adjusted to the appropriate FTE.

Summary:

Under limited supervision, provides direct patient care, including risk assessment, genetic counseling, and test coordination for individuals with personal or family histories of cancer. Responsibilities include patient evaluations, psychosocial assessments, and developing personalized screening and management plans. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team including genetic counselors, social support services, attending physicians, fellows, residents, and nurse practitioners. The role involves active participation in research activities/protocols within area of expertise as well as supporting student education and developing patient materials.

Minimum Job Requirements of a Senior Genetic Counselor:

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or directly equivalent discipline. At least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Board Certification as a Genetic Counselor. Licensed by the New Mexico Medical Board. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Verification of education and licensure will be required if selected for hire.

Duties and Responsibilities of a Senior Genetic Counselor:



  1. Oversee and coordinate direct patient care, ensuring compliance with regulations, policies, and quality standards.
  2. Collect medical and family histories through patient interviews and medical record reviews.
  3. Evaluate new patients, including follow-ups and emergency add-ons.
  4. Provide pre- and post-test genetic counseling, including risk assessment, informed decision-making, genetic test coordination, and result disclosure.
  5. Develop personalized screening, management plans, and psychosocial assessments for patients.
  6. Participate in case conferences, tumor boards, or working groups.
  7. Create and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for clinic operations.
  8. Coordinate genetic counseling student rotations, including onboarding, supervision, and evaluations.
  9. Provide internal or external didactic education session (e.g., lectures, presentations, grand rounds).
  10. Assist in onboarding and mentoring newly hired genetic counselors.
  11. Support research activities, including protocol execution and compliance with institutional requirements.
  12. Develop patient educational materials and triage inquiries from clinic coordinators, providers, and external groups.
  13. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
