About the Job

The Student Training Experience Program is partnering with Riverland students, who will gain meaningful laboratory science experiences through an internship at The Hormel Institute. The STEP internships will allow students an opportunity to apply knowledge learned through coursework and gain practical experience within the research field. Interns will be provided with various opportunities to help them gain real biomedical research experience, enhance professional development and increase their understanding and appreciation for the research and science profession.

*Schedule: Up to 15 hours per week or a total of 130 hours*
*Aligned with Riverland's academic calendar*

Position Duties and Responsibilities

* Perform laboratory experiments in the assigned laboratory.
* Clean, sanitize and maintain laboratory bench space and equipment such as autoclaving and glassware.
* Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations in conjunction with the laboratory.
* Help maintain lab supplies inventory by checking stock and determining levels.
* Be an active team member in the laboratory.
* Participate in program evaluation- start, middle, and end of program.
* Participate in professional development opportunities designed for interns.
* Other duties as assigned.

Some on-site work may be necessary for certain positions, even those designated as fully remote. This position has been designated as eligible for Flexible Work Profile One.
Flexible Work Profile One is expected to work primarily on-site. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, MN. The Hormel Institute management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
* High School Diploma/GED or equivalent
* Ability to understand and follow written and oral instruction in English
* Must be a current Riverland Community College student enrolled in science coursework, majoring in Laboratory Sciences, Biology, or Chemistry related degrees

Preferred Qualifications
* College coursework in biology and/or chemistry
* Prior laboratory experience
* Skilled in completing work accurately and with attention to detail

The Hormel Institute is an independent biomedical research institution within the University of Minnesota's Research and Innovation Office. Established in 1942, our mission is to conduct research and provide education in the biological sciences with applications in medicine and agriculture, specifically by understanding, treating, and controlling cancer and other chronic diseases. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $16.00/hour
