Principal Systems Engineer - Machine Integration Lead

The Principal Systems Engineer - Machine Integration Lead (MIL) leads the engineering development activities for mobile cleaning equipment products on new product development and large-scale lifecycle management efforts at Tennant.This position primarily works as the Engineering Lead on a cross-functional team to design and develop innovative electro-mechanical machines that meet requirements for performance, quality, product cost, and project timelines.Additionally, this role leads and contributes to technical product strategy development including: product platform and architecture development, product simplification improvements, technology and innovation concept development, product & technology roadmap inputs, and project strategy phase execution.

Required Skills



  • Engineering project leadership with excellent project planning & organization
  • In-depth understanding of the Systems Engineering V-Model and its application in the development of complex electro-mechanical systems
  • System requirements development & decomposition, maintenance, & use of requirements tools (such as Visure, Jama, DOORS, etc.)
  • Electro-Mechanical Systems Architecting, Concept Ideation & Downselection, & Product Design
  • Expertise in Verification & Validation (V&V) techniques and methodologies and Design Verification Planning (DVP)
  • Risk Management techniques and methodologies including FMEA (Failure Mode Effects and Analysis), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA)
  • Broad technical knowledge of other product design techniques and methodologies including DFA/M (Design for Manufacturability/Assembly), Dimensional tolerance analysis & definition
  • Problem Solving Methodologies including 8D, Ishikawa Root Cause Analysis, 5 Whys
  • Self-starter, able to successfully manage ambiguous design tasks.
  • Ability to identify & influence model development work for predicting system performance based on engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in CAD required (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Data based decision making / statistical analysis.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to develop engineering standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective multi-mode communications in presenting information to a variety of internal and external audiences.



Required Experience



  • BS in Mechanical, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET accredited four-year college or university.
  • MS in Systems or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • 10 + years of new product development experience, with project leadership experiences strongly preferred.
  • Strong project planning / management experiences. Project Management Professional (PMP) a plus.
  • Experience in electric vehicle &/or autonomous vehicle development preferred
  • Strong technical background, with machine & system integration experiences on complex electro-mechanical systems, ideally on electric vehicle architectures, systems, & subsystems
  • Demonstrated experience in whole product-level systems requirements development, management, & architecture definition
  • Experience with problem solving processes, tools and techniques (8D, Six Sigma / DMAIC, root cause analysis tools- DFMEA, 5-why, fishbone etc.).
  • Experience with issue-tracking systems (JIRA, Confluence etc.) a plus
  • Background in product development certification processes for regulatory and third-party certifications to obtain CE marking, UL marking, and compliance with applicable safety standards such as IEC/UL 60335-1, IEC/UL 60335-2-72, UL-583, UL-558, IEC 63327
  • General knowledge in Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) practices/tools (such as SysML modeling) and experience in applying it to the full engineering lifecycle a plus
  • INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) a plus



Additionally, this role:



  • Manages technical aspects of multiple system integration
  • Creates new concepts for machine architectures and sub-system platforming plans to meet machine level performance specifications.
  • Establishes machine level performance specifications to meet customer needs and plans for evolution of these specifications over time.
  • Prepares preliminary layouts, models, sketches and/or schematic diagrams to aid in the understanding and solution of engineering problems.
  • Determines nature and type of electronic models, detail drawings, and analysis required for assigned subsystems and supervises their completion through the development cycle.
  • Leads and mentors junior engineers and designers throughout the development cycle.
  • Leverages laboratory and field test data to understand and manage design trade-offs.
  • Collaborates closely with and leads the machine and subsystem teams to achieve program goals.
  • Leads a team to create designs, specifications, and drawing releases.
  • Establishes machine and subsystem development plans and schedules from concept to production implementation within overall business requirements.Tracks and reports progress to the cross-functional program leaders and engineering management.
  • Leads and participates in formal/informal design reviews.
  • Plans and executes prototype builds at the machine and subsystem level.
  • Leads the production launch and implementation of product and subsystem designs.



Competitive base salary commensurate with experience: $111,400 - 172,300 Annualized

Posted salary ranges are made in good faith. Tennant Co. reserves the right to adjust ranges depending on the experience/qualifications of the selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.

Total Compensation = Base Salary + Benefits
