Overview

Prepares histologic slides and tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologist. Work at other Mercy facilities performing the same functions, as required. Work alternate shifts, weekends and holidays as needed to adequately provide services. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Utilize the Information System to receive samples, order tests, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities and produce reports required to perform job tasks.
  • Confirms accuracy of patient sample identification prior to performing processes; evaluates specimen quality and identifies when unacceptable. Documents information concerning quality of specimen.
  • Prepares sections of human tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue specimens received from surgery.
  • Operates tissue processing equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
  • Performs tissue sectioning using microtome, prepares slides, stains and coverslips.
  • Performs special and immunohistochemical stains and procedures as necessary.
  • Performs gross examination on designated specimens using canned comments under the direction of a Pathologist.
  • Maintains filing system and records for slides, blocks and tissues.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance of equipment.

Education and Experience

Graduate of an approved Histotechnology program preferred. Must be qualified to perform high complexity testing according to CLIA 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications.


Certification and Licensure

ASCP certification preferred.
