Overview

Provides forensic consulting services requiring knowledge in the field of architecture design. Requires a strong background and understanding of technical aspects of residential and commercial design, construction, operation and maintenance. Requires knowledge and experience building and life safety codes as well as ADA guidelines. Assesses and determines the cause and origin of building envelope failures, and design and/or construction defects.

Essential Job Functions



  • Performs forensic assignments within the field of building and premises design and premises liability to assist in the resolution of disputes.
  • Performs on-site building systems evaluations and inspections to determine the cause and origin of failed, defective, damaged, and /or potential resultant damage which may include moisture intrusion and storm-related damage to building envelope systems.
  • Perform site inspection to assess safety and compliance with applicable codes and safety standards. Performs coefficient of friction testing of walking surfaces in accordance with industry standards. Research applicable code, ordinances and standards.
  • Inspection sites may include but are not limited to residences, hospitality and retail buildings, including parking lots, swimming pools, recreation areas, exterior walkways and anywhere where people may gather and interact with the built environment.
  • May be called upon to assess the standard of care of other architectural professionals as part of a forensic assignment.
  • Provides clients with the results of their investigations in both oral and written report format. Signs and seals their written reports after the report has been internally technically reviewed.


  • Works as both a seller and a doer of our consulting services. By providing industry leading customer service and comprehensive technical investigations develops long term relationships with our insurance and attorney clientele.


  • B.S. Architecture and/or Engineering degree or higher required with education in biomechanics, human factors engineering or a field of human safety as a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience individually or combined as a design professional in the technical design of building and/or safety systems.
  • Registered Architect Certification required.
  • Certified XL Tribometrist (CXLT) a plus.
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) a plus.
  • OSHA certification a plus.
  • Active participation in a technical committee related to human safety a plus.
  • Interest and ability to obtain other certifications to enhance professional resume.


Required Skills and Abilities



  • Ability to work independently and manage his/her own investigative assignments and clients with minimal supervision in a commercially minded manner.
  • Must have high level of analytical skills. Work requires continual attention to detail with the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Good report writing skills, ability to develop and commit to budgets, scopes, and deadlines are also required.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate with clients at all levels (e.g. internal and external), and work independently with good judgment and critical thinking skills.
  • Must have knowledge of a variety of computer software applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Applications and computer assisted engineering and design software.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical reports or codes, financial reports and legal documents.
  • Ability to clearly and coherently write scopes-of-work, budget estimates, schedules, reports of findings, proposals, general correspondence, and other technical documents.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients.
  • Capable of effectively presenting information to top management, clients, public groups and/or boards of directors.


Physical Demands, Overtime, and Travel Requirements

Physical Demands - Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (i.e. Client's office, industrial, construction, and/or residential sites). Employee is frequently required to stand, walk on slope roofs, sit, climb ladders, bend, climb inside attics and crawl under homes and tunnels, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to job sites. Employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee must be sharp, focused, and alert when conducting site inspections, speaking and interacting with clients, preparing written reports of findings, and testifying in deposition or trial. Clear vision and depth perception are also necessary.

Overtime - This position is classified as salaried with an exempt FLSA status. Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one hour for lunch. However, our consultants are able to make their own schedules within the confines of meeting client scheduling needs and expectations. Occasional odd working hours may be required in order to complete technical investigations.

Travel Requirements - This position requires up to 25% travel overnight out of area travel as most inspections are completed locally.

The Salary Range for this position is $100,000.00 - $130,000.00 and is dependent on education, experience, location and certifications/licensure.
