Sabathani Community Center (SCC) is a 58-year-old African American institution and nonprofit serving a multi-cultural community of 50,000 community members in South Minneapolis. SCC was founded in 1966 by a handful of concerned community members seeking to address social and economic disparities in underserved communities in the areas of youth programming, housing, health and education. Wages & Benefits

$23.80 per hour; Generous Paid Time Off (PTO), plus 11 paid holidays and two floating holidays; competitive health, dental, and vision insurance; Health Savings Account (HSA), and options for Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). There is employer paid basic life insurance with the option for additional coverage paid by the employee. The employer pays for Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) and short- and long-term disability insurance. SCC sponsors a retirement plan with 4% employer match and immediate vesting.

A Typical Day in the Life...

A typical day as Sabathani's Outreach Worker provides an opportunity to prevent risk and shootings in the community by managing a case load of 15-20 participants and helping connect them to resources. Responsibilities will include the following:



  • Creating a Risk-Needs-Resilience (RNR) Assessment with participants to identify goals, objectives, action steps, and dates.
  • Bringing awareness to the community about violence reduction efforts.
  • Notifying the Violence Interruption team about incidences of potential violence.
  • Working to intervene in situations where violence is likely, including potential retaliation.
  • Anticipating and responding to the Site Supervisor's requests and needs.
  • Meeting regularly with the Site Supervisor to receive and share updates and information regarding the work.
  • Conducting outreach activities with the community to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups.
  • Identifying youth at risk of joining violent groups and implementing effective case management activities to address any current or potential problems.
  • Linking individuals to services and opportunities in the community as needed.
  • Advocating for youth in court when necessary.
  • Identifying "hot spots" for shootings and violence (conducting surveys with residents and community organizations to identify areas frequented by potential offenders) and providing documentation.
  • Documenting detailed client case notes.



Who You Are



  • You have a High School diploma or GED, or you have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • You have previous experience working with at-risk youth and adults.
  • You demonstrate excellent communication skills and proficiency in writing.
  • You have experience and/or training in crisis intervention.
  • You are knowledgeable of community resources.
  • You have the ability to de-escalate conflicts and intervene effectively in crisis situations.
  • You understand and respect diverse backgrounds, demonstrating cultural competence.
  • You have skills in resolving disputes and mediating conflicts.
  • You are skilled in mobilizing communities for violence prevention.
  • You demonstrate strong collaboration skills with the ability to work well with professionals and community partners.
  • You are familiar with local laws and policies on violence prevention.
  • You are aware of trauma and its impact on individuals, showing trauma sensitivity.
  • You are highly skilled in problem-solving.
  • You possess a valid driver's license, have access to reliable transportation, and can meet Sabathani's driving record requirements. Please note that if your license was not issued in the state of Minnesota, you have 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident to apply for your Minnesota driver's license or permit (not applicable for new hires living out of state).
