About the Department

The Community Medicine team consists of two faculty veterinarians, one certified veterinary technician, and one One Health Clinic project manager. In 2020, UMN CVM established a Dean's level initiative in Community Medicine (CM), building on a strong legacy of service learning to expand CM concepts into all stages of the veterinary curriculum, interprofessional education experiences, and additional opportunities for hands-on training. The CM program addresses the access to veterinary care challenges pet owners in our community face, while fundamentally changing how we train students and how we address the need for new knowledge in this space. The program's three arms include didactic teaching (Spectrum of Care, Access to Veterinary Care), clinical teaching (two fourth year clinical rotations focused on Spectrum of Care and Access to Veterinary Care), and community partnerships/service learning (SIRVS, VeTouch, One Health Clinic).

Our Anesthesia and Surgery services work closely with this position. We have 5 faculty and 4 residents in Anesthesia. In Surgery, we have 2 faculty and 2 residents. They help provide their skills and expertise during the surgery labs.

Members of the Teaching Technician Team are carefully selected and receive ongoing training to enhance student learning and support faculty in achieving educational goals. Their training emphasizes guiding students to self-assess their understanding and performance of clinical skills, providing constructive feedback and feed-forward to support growth, and fostering a safe, supportive learning environment. Additionally, they collaborate with faculty to reinforce teaching objectives, facilitate hands-on learning experiences, and ensure consistency in skill development, all of which contribute to a more comprehensive and engaging educational experience for students.
