Position Highlights |
For almost 40 years, the Sarver Heart Center at the University of Arizona has been at the forefront of groundbreaking discoveries and innovative therapies. Our scientists, physicians and nurses have significantly advanced the field of cardiovascular medicine and transformed cardiovascular science and patient care worldwide. The center has recently appointed a new Director, Dr Hesham Sadek whose vision for the center is excellence in cardiovascular care, research, and education. The center is currently focusing on the transition of Dr. Sadek's grants from his former institution to UA and another goal is obtaining new grants and research programs and agendas to support the vision. The Sarver Heart Center is seeking a Laboratory Operations Lead to manage the laboratory operations for specific research labs in the center. This role will be instrumental in the transition of Dr Sadek's grants and associated laboratories from his former institution to UA. Laboratory operations will include equipment maintenance and training, managing orders, service contracts, animal protocols, and Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs). This position develops, adapts, and builds standard operating procedures and techniques to ensure a smooth transition and oversees compliance with specific experiment requirements. The position will also train and lead laboratory staff and other key partners such as faculty. This position may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement in conversation with the supervisor. Duties & Responsibilities |
Lab Management
- Works with lab faculty and staff to facilitate a smooth transition of the grants and labs from UT Southwestern to University of Arizona.
- Works with Center Director and PI's to develop strategic and operational plans for the lab spaces assigned.
- Provide orientation and training to lab staff and faculty in the application and use of scientific equipment, and use of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory activities.
- Assist PIs in developing and testing new experimental procedures and techniques.
- Oversee the daily experimental procedures of all the ongoing projects in the assigned labs to ensure all diagnostic testing and lab activities comply with regulatory quality control and safety programs.
- Evaluates and facilitates the experimental work and data analysis in the lab.
- Partners with other functional areas and Departmental leadership for needs assessment, process improvements, recommended solutions and implementation of programs/initiatives.
Regulatory/Safety
- Maintain lab in compliance with federal and institutional regulatory standards.
- Ensures that all personnel are properly trained in chemical safety, NHP safety, and general lab safety.
- Ensures that lab personnel are compliant with regulatory requirements and that labs are compliant with relevant standards.
- Writes SOPs and implements policies in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Carries out training in fire safety, chemical safety, and coordinates safety with the Occupational Health Department.
- Work with animal care regulatory documents.
Lab Supplies & Equipment
- Act as primary conduit for purchase of high dollar scientific equipment and center-wide general resources.
- Oversees lab inventory and justifies purchases to department administration.
- Allocates resources to acquire all necessary equipment and supplies for a smooth operation of the entire lab.
- Maintenance of facilities and equipment, and additional out-sourcing to service vendors as needed.
- Coordinate and perform preventative maintenance, manage service contracts, and make repairs as needed.
- Oversee scheduling of commonly shared equipment.
- Develops and implements lab policies to improve efficiency and oversees the availability of equipment and supplies for the work of all lab personnel.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's degree.
- ASCP certification at the Scientist/Technologist level.
