Assistant Technician, Advanced Machining and Machine Tool Group (Temporary)

Overview:

The primary function of this position is to support the Advanced Machining and Machine Tool Group with a focus on CNC machining, CAD/CAM programming, precision manufacturing, and machining operations. The group efforts are dedicated to advancing machining processes through innovative technologies, integrating additive and subtractive manufacturing, hardware and software applications, sensors, and data analysis. Projects require hands-on machining, technical problem-solving, and process optimization in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain CNC machines for precision manufacturing.
  • Set up, troubleshoot, and program CNC equipment using Mastercam and SolidWorks.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD models for machining processes.
  • Ensure quality control and part validation using precision measurement tools.
  • Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and researchers to support R&D projects and manufacturing innovations.
  • Adhere to safety standards and assist in maintaining an organized, efficient machine shop environment.
  • Document machining processes and results, assisting in workflow improvements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • AS degree in precision machining technology
  • Experience in CNC machine operation, including Haas mills and lathes.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam and SolidWorks for designing and programming parts.
  • Understanding of precision measurement tools and machining processes for quality control and part validation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, set up, and maintain CNC machines in a manufacturing environment.
  • Exposure to manual machining operations (lathes, mills, and surface grinders).
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced R&D setting with a focus on manufacturing innovation.
  • Experience in MIG welding is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Assist in manual machining (lathes, mills, and surface grinders) for prototyping and specialty part fabrication.
  • Support testing and validation of new machining technologies for ongoing experiments
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

This is a temporary 12-month position. The appointment length will be up to 12 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
