Job Description

Radiological Control Shift Leads are the experienced radiological controls department personnel primarily responsible for supervising Radiological Control Technicians (RCT) on the production floor. They serve as subject matter experts of Radiological Controls Operations and are responsible to assist supervisors in coordinating activities of workers engaged in radiological work. Responsible to attain appropriate qualifications. Responds to radiological problems to ensure employee and environmental safety. Responds to reactor plant anomalies or casualties, if applicable. Designates duties to RCTs and leads department activities.

Essential Duties:



  • Maintains knowledge of local, program and Federal radiological regulations.
  • Supports timely and correct execution of radiological work. These responsibilities may include planning, training, oversight, and work execution.
  • Assists management in assigning personnel to accomplish radiological work tasks
  • Responsible for the safety of the workers under their supervision.
  • Reviews and oversees the preparation of work procedures.
  • Maintains processes to ensure that work tasks are executed according to established procedures for radiological, environmental, safety, industrial hygiene, accountability, and criticality controls. Responsible for clear verbal communications of work and work issues to senior management or the Naval Reactors Local Field Office.
  • Assist management in ensuring the workforce is ready and capable to conduct the required tasks. Participates in training program development for the work team.
  • Mentors and coaches RCTs and prototype staff, as applicable, during day-to-day operations, including during complex operations.
  • Participates in local and Site casualty response as a leader, including the maintenance of applicable qualifications and skills.
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

High school diploma or equivalent and successful completion of Radiological Controls Technician Qualification School (RCTQS) with the ability to qualify as a Supervisory Radiological Controls Technician (SRCT) or currently qualified as a SRCT and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or

High school diploma or equivalent and qualification as a Naval Nuclear Propulsion Operator (or commercial nuclear equivalent) and successful completion of Radiological Controls Technician Qualification School (RCTQS) with the ability to qualify as a SRCT or currently qualified as a SRCT and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and successful completion of RCTQS with the ability to qualify as a SRCT or currently qualified as a SRCT and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and successful completion of RCTQS with the ability to qualify as a SRCT or currently qualified as a SRCT and a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.

Pay Range

$92,900.00 - $145,200.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guide line only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations
