Job Description

Naval Nuclear Laboratory seeks a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer to join a team developing state of the art, two-phase, thermal-hydraulic analysis tools based on CFD technology. Versions of these tools are ready for assessment, with respect to various experimental data and analysis problems, in the areas of core thermal performance, secondary plant, and safety transient simulations. The CFD Development group seeks an engineer to model two-phase flow problems using commercial CFD-based codes, evaluate the strengths and limitations of various approaches and improve code performance for design use. The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment with frequent interactions amongst other CFD, test and design engineers and will be capable of applying emerging technologies to conventional and novel applications. In addition to requisite and desired technical qualifications, the applicant should be able to communicate technical topics clearly and concisely with peers and management.

Responsibilities include:

* Use of commercial and in-house CFD-related software to model two-phase flow in reactor plant systems and components

* Research, development and implementation of two-phase models in the context of drift flux and two-fluid frameworks, including relevant constitutive equations and boundary conditions

* CFD analyses of steady-state and transient two-phase scenarios on high performance, Linux-based computing systems

* Self-checks of model setup and validation of simulation results through comparisons to test data, analytical solutions, or benchmarks to other available CFD results

* Collaboration with test engineers and CFD analysts to interpret multiphase experimental data for use in model development and validation

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 2 years of relevant experience; or PhD degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field ; or Currently or previously NPE qualified; or CTE/ACRS and 1 year EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and 1 year as SRE.

Preferred Skills

* Experience developing and implementing multiphase closure models in a CFD code, including phase change and convective boiling phenomena

* Ability to perform multiphase scaling analysis relevant to closure modeling and experimental conditions

* Experience with commercial or open source CFD solvers and post-processors

* Experience with turbulence modeling methods for internal flow problems

* Experience with scripting (Python, MATLAB or other) to automate job submittal, solution monitoring and post-processing on high performance Linux-based computing systems

* Knowledge of two-phase experimental methods, data analysis and uncertainties

* Familiarity with CFD verification, validation and uncertainty quantification methods

* Knowledge of numerics, including linear and non-linear solvers, computational schemes, C++ and modern Fortran programming, code parallelization and porting to modern hardware platforms

* Experience with geometry creation, import and export using Creo, SolidWorks, or similar Computer-Aided Design software, as well as experience building CFD meshes for turbulent flow in internal geometries

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.

All candidates must be U.S. citizens. Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter.
