Job Description

Naval Nuclear Laboratory's (NNL) Reactor Technology (RT) team is seeking an entry-level Software Engineer with a passion for helping other developers accomplish their work. All work efforts include a focus on establishing and developing a DevSecOps culture. New team members will be joining a passionate, forward-looking team with opportunities to help define and implement the future of high velocity, high quality, secured software life cycles for technologies critical to delivering capabilities to the US NAVY.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Develop secure software development pipeline patterns

* Work with customers to understand their requirements and integrate with existing and new software

* Automation of business and software processes

* Work independently or with interdisciplinary teams with minimal supervision

Finally, you can expect opportunities to be a contributing member on one or more ancillary teams focused on continuous improvement and/or cross organizational initiatives.

This role can be successfully conducted via a blend of working from home and onsite at an NNL location. The amount of time spent at each will vary depending on the work being executed.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field.

Preferred Skills

  • Examples on Github, including GitHub Actions
  • Software design and development workflows and utilities (e.g., unit testing, continuous integration, continuous deployment, version control, debugging, profiling, optimization)
  • Experience developing software with various languages (C/C++, Python, Java, nodejs, Go)
  • Experience with web development
  • Experience with scripting (PowerShell, Bash or similar)
  • Knowledge of various build environments (Maven, Spack, CMake, etc)
  • Knowledge of cyber security tooling, processes and best practices
  • Foundational understanding of Microsoft Azure or similar cloud services
  • Knowledge of infrastructure and pipelines supporting optimization, machine learning, and/or data analytics
  • Familiarity with AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot

Pay Range
$62,000.00 - $94,900.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guide line only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
