The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Manager of Science Communications is responsible for overseeing the US Science Support Program (USSSP) Science Communication initiatives. This role focuses on increasing awareness of scientific ocean drilling and Earth science, managing digital communications on behalf of USSSP-particularly across social media platforms-leading outreach and education efforts for scheduled ocean drilling expeditions, and inspiring STEM students to pursue careers in Earth sciences.

The Manager works closely with USSSP personnel. This is a full-time, in-person position based on the LDEO campus.

Responsibilities



  • Manage and coordinate science communication and messaging for the U.S. Science Support Program, including the strategic deployment of the social media platform accounts currently used (Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
  • Performs regular assessment of impact across all social media platforms and reports those analytics and metrics to the USSSP Associate Director.
  • Assist U.S. drilling proponents with developing and implementing strategic outreach plans for drilling proposals.
  • Coordinate regular digital community updates and newsletters, as well as other digital communications, with the scientific ocean drilling community as required, including maintenance of mailing lists.
  • Support USSSP leadership in developing and managing a strong web presence that maximizes dissemination of key strategic messages on two USSSP websites, one scientific and one outreach-oriented.
  • Assist USSSP in promoting external outreach activities relevant to the IODP community, including management of USSSP's external collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History and coordination and attendance at domestic meetings and conferences.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required plus 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with social media essential (e.g., social networking, social curation on leading social media platforms), including utilizing the metrics and analytics capabilities of each platform.
  • Must be able to work independently and to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required.
  • Familiarity and experience with MS Office required; graphic design skills highly desirable.


Preferred Qualifications



  • At least one year of related outreach experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with scientific research and programs is desirable but not essential.
