Department Overview

The Enterprise Health and Safety (EH&S) organization is a team of dedicated safety professionals committed to using their skills and experience to keep our employees safe. The organization works closely with all lines of business providing the vision for enterprise-wide programs to meet PG&E's objectives of safety and health.

The Ergonomics and Industrial Athlete Program, under EH&S, serves to help PG&E coworkers work safely, efficiently and at their best each day by providingdata driven, scientifically backed solutionsthat optimize human wellbeing and performance. We work as subject matter experts to identify ergonomics risk factors and recommend mitigations that systematically reduce risk through elimination, engineering, administrative, and behavioral controls.

Position Summary

The Ergonomics and Industrial Athlete program is looking for a talented summer intern to research and evaluate the use of back and shoulder exoskeletons/exosuits for material handling tasks in warehouse and garage mechanic work environments culminating in a report and poster presentation that defines the potential benefits, risks, and expected outcomes.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

The hourly rate for a bachelor's degree ranges from $19.91 to $29.81 and for a master's degree is $35.37 and Ph.d at 48.46.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a literature review on the benefits and effectiveness of back/shoulder exoskeletons to reduce the risk of injury in industrial work settings
  • Research material handling tasks that may benefit from the use of back/shoulder exoskeleton technology
  • Perform a work task audit for material handlers and garage mechanics to identify work tasks that may benefit from exoskeleton use
  • Conduct testing of exoskeletons with target workers and record findings and worker feedback (if test units are available)
  • Identify potential barriers for a successful exoskeleton program based on research findings and observations
  • Develop a report and poster presentation outlining findings, cost benefit analysis, and recommendations for next steps

The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities as described above working alongside our team of ergonomics program managers, industrial athlete specialists, and functional area safety leads. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of opportunities and challenges faced by human factors / ergonomics practitioners in a dynamic work environment.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Industrial Engineering or a related field at an accredited University; or PhD candidates with relevant work experience, educational or research background
  • Students must be continuing their full time education towards their degree during and/or after the internship
  • Must have a valid driver's license or obtain one at least 30 days prior to start date.

Desired:

  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Human factors engineering or ergonomics project or research experience in industrial settings
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
