Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Campus Recreation provides a variety of programs and services to meet the
recreation/fitness/wellness needs of the university community. Campus
Recreation maintains several facilities around campus to help students stay
active. In addition to the Rams Head Recreation Center and the Student
Recreation Center, there is an indoor and outdoor pool, a number of outdoor
courts for tennis, basketball, volleyball and paddle tennis, and lighted fields
for sport club practices/matches and team intramural sports. Students have
about 50 sport clubs and more than 40 intramural sports for men's, women's,
and co-rec teams. Campus Recreation has a unique dual reporting structure
in which it reports to both Student Affairs and the Department of Exercise
and Sport Science via the Campus Recreation Administrative Board. |
Position Summary |
Position Summary:
The Fitness and Wellness Intern is responsible for assisting with the planning and coordination of Campus Recreation fitness programs and services at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Fitness and Wellness Intern ensures that the fitness programs and services (Group Fitness, Personal Training, and Small Group Training) are fun, safe, diverse, and intentional, and satisfy the needs of the University community. The candidate will assist in managing an innovative and growing fitness program. This position works as an integral and contributing member of the Campus Recreation Fitness Leadership team and will report to the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist the Assistant Director and Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness with the oversight of a comprehensive fitness program including group fitness, personal training, and small group training.
- Manage several aspects of fitness operations including staff scheduling, program development, equipment inventory, strategic planning, and staff evaluations.
- Assist with the hiring, training, on-boarding, and development of approximately 25 Personal Trainers, 40 Group Fitness Instructors, 10 Group Training Coaches, and 3 student program assistants.
- Supervise one or multiple fitness and wellness program assistants with tasks related to the fitness program.
- Co-facilitate the ACE Group Fitness Instructor and/or NASM Personal Training programs during the first semester of the internship and lead facilitate during the second semester.
- Plan and lead monthly in-service meetings/trainings for Group Fitness Instructors, Personal Trainers, and Group Training Coaches.
- Coordinate, organize, and deliver weekly email communication and announcements to fitness and wellness student staff.
- Oversee equipment inventory, space organization, and troubleshooting of technology issues in all Fitness spaces.
- Manage all Group Fitness private class sales and instructor paring process and/or Personal Training sales and the client pairing process.
- Contribute to the fitness program by teaching or training at least 2 classes/clients per semester.
- Plan and execute special events related to fitness and wellness programming, including Weeks of Welcome, Wellbeing Day, Fall/Spring into Fitness, health/wellness fairs, and educational workshops.
- Conduct performance evaluations for group fitness and/or personal trainers on a semester basis and lead the peer evaluation process for our instructor staff.
- Conduct regular program assessments to determine satisfaction levels, and areas of improvement and measure learning outcomes for patrons.
- Research and apply current knowledge of fitness and wellness programming best practices.
- Organize and maintain employee information, disciplinary actions, etc.
- Assist with the instruction of CPR/AED trainings for student staff.
- Collaborate with colleagues on Campus Recreation projects and other duties as assigned by the Leadership Team.
- Participate in department staff meetings, committee assignments, and department-wide programs.
- Perform additional duties as requested by supervisor or as necessary by business demands.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
- Course work in exercise science, physiology, kinesiology, health promotion or related field
- Current nationally recognized Fitness Certification in either Personal Training or Group Fitness (i.e. ACSM, ACE, NASM, NSCA, AFAA)
- First Aid, CPR and AED Certification through the American Red Cross, or the ability to obtain within 1 month from date of hire
- Experience at the collegiate level in the participation, delivery, and administration of fitness/wellness programs preferred.
- Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills, proven written and organization skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and present creative ideas.
