Position Overview

Based at the Stafford, Texas, R&D laboratory, the R&D Chemist will be part of a safe and environmentally responsible team focused on the development of new technologies and commercialization of new products to meet customer needs.

Job Responsibilities


  • Ensure that EH&S goals and targets are met by following safety standards and maintaining a clean and safe work area.
  • Design and synthesize small molecules, polymers, and thermosetting resins to support current business and growth initiatives.
  • Under the guidance of R&D/project manager, design, formulate, and synthesize products to meet application requirements and customer needs.
  • Conduct characterization and application testing of new materials.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain analytical instruments, including GC, HPLC, EA, MIR, KF water analysis, and auto-titrators.
  • Develop new analytical test methods and improve existing methods for both R&D and QC.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and records.
  • Monitor current literature, industry trends, and patent activity.
  • Collaborate with IP counsel to draft patent applications and protect intellectual property.
  • Prepare samples or formulations for customers to evaluate in lab or field tests.
  • Support process scale-up and participate in production trials.
  • Order new chemicals and assist in maintaining an accurate chemical inventory.

Minimum Qualifications


  • BS in Chemistry or related field
  • 2+ years experience
  • Hands-on experience in multi-step and polymer synthesis in R&D environment
  • Prefer experience with hydrogen sulfide scavengers and additional Oilfield chemicals used in drilling, cementing, and other oil and gas operations.
  • Demonstrated excellence in problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to conduct effective lab experiments and develop analytical methods.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels within Hexion and at customer locations.
  • Strong computer skills with experience in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and statistical programs such as JMP and/or MiniTab
  • Must be highly organized and self-directed with good time management skills.
