THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation (PennDOT) in Chambersburg seeks a dedicated individual to join our team and make a real impact on road safety. As a Driver's License Examiner with a commercial driver's license (CDL), you will play a vital role in enhancing highway safety by conducting standardized examinations for both commercial and non-commercial driver's license applicants. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Driver License Examiner with a CDL at PennDOT Chambersburg, you will be vital in promoting road safety. Your responsibilities include assessing the qualifications of applicants, evaluating vehicle conditions, and conducting vision tests, including telebinocular and color perception assessments.

You will administer both non-commercial and commercial driver license knowledge examinations, ensuring candidates understand the vehicle code and traffic signs. Additionally, you will perform pre-trip, skills, and driving tests according to departmental standards, while identifying any irregularities in applications and inspecting vehicles for compliance. You will efficiently process test results and issue driver licenses and identification cards to eligible applicants. Providing excellent customer service, you will assist with license renewals, duplicates, out-of-state transfers, motorcycle licenses, and CDL maintenance, all while staying informed about commercial license restrictions and endorsements.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment; 80 hours bi-weekly.
  • Work hours are 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM, Tuesday - Saturday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • This position may require travel and overtime.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Driver License Examiner Assistant (commonwealth title); or

  • Two years of experience obtaining, evaluating, and providing information to the public.

Special Requirements:
  • This position require an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent and twenty-one years of age at the time of application.
  • This position require no suspensions or revocations of a driver's license during the five year period immediately preceding employment.
  • All employees in this job hired after February 28, 2022, are required to obtain an active unrestricted Class M driver's license within the first six months of employment or before the end of the probationary period and maintain it during employment.
  • This position requires possession of an active Class A Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the following endorsements: P and N. The Commercial Driver License cannot have any of the following restrictions: E, L, N, O, or Z.
