Position Summary

Join the Greenfield Development Team at Deriva Energy as a Development Intern! This dynamic role offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our business. Interns will learn to use analytic tools and mapping software to identify and analyze potential sites for new utility-scale energy storage projects, as well as conduct research and perform analysis. Interns will also gain insight into the development process by assisting senior developers.

The Development Team, based in Charlotte, works in a hybrid work environment that enables interns to quickly acclimate and have an immediate impact. The Development Team curates a hard-working and supportive environment that offers decades of energy and development experience across multiple technologies and disciplines.

Responsibilities:

Candidates will engage in a wide variety of tasks to advance the development of new energy storage projects while collaborating cross-functionally across the organization.

Research and Strategy- research emerging trends and help identify pathways for new development opportunities:

  • Research emerging market trends within the energy storage space, including ISO/RTO policy, utility IRPs, new customer segments and supplier trends.

  • Analyze and develop analytical models and tools using market data to discover insights and make recommendations

  • Document and present findings in a clear way

  • Gather information from different teams and inform strategy on where to site energy storage projects within different states.

Project Prospecting- identify potential utility-scale storage sites to expand Deriva's pipeline by following an established site evaluation process:

  • Utilize web-based tools to assess site constraints including topography, wetland impacts, flood risk, geotechnical impacts, and endangered species presence.

  • Analyze financial viability of project locations using pricing metrics and interconnection costs.

  • Research the renewable energy policy environment at the local and state level.

  • Evaluate inbound M&A opportunities.

  • Assist with land acquisition through preparation of landowner materials

Required/ Basic Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an Master's degree program in Environmental Science, Engineering, Business, Economics, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.25.

  • Strong leadership qualities demonstrated through effective decision-making and clear communication.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds to achieve common goals.

  • Capacity to deliver superior results though effective prioritization, planning, and execution of assigned tasks.

  • Proficiency in software and engineering applications.

  • Strong analytical capabilities and attention to detail.

  • Completed coursework in energy with a general understanding of the field.

  • Desire to pursue a career in the energy industry.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a hybrid position. Interns should reside within a reasonable daily commute to the Charlotte office.
