Position Description
ERT is seeking a AIX System Administrator to support operations and maintenance of the ground systems for NOAA Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO) environmental-monitoring satellite missions. Data from our missions is used in weather forecasting, climate research, forest fire detection, search and rescue, and much more. The system administrators provide onsite/remote IT support in collaboration with government technical leads. They are instrumental in implementing new directives to build out and configure enterprise tools; leverage those tools to maintain accurate inventory and automate monitoring, alerts, and reports; and cross-train each other so as to provide strong quality assurance and team integration. Responsibilities include:

  • Troubleshoot real time anomalies
  • Ensure accountability and proper operation of all hardware and software
  • Setup and maintain automated alerts and reports
  • OS and software installations, upgrades, and security patches/virus protection
  • Hardware hot swaps and rebuild/reimaging
  • Coordinate system modifications with satellite operations team to avoid disruption of service
  • Audit and maintain inventories of servers, workstations, software, and licenses
  • Follow CM and issue-tracking processes
  • Provide off-hour, on-call emergency support (on a rotating basis with team members; this is a rarity on the order of once every couple months)
  • Produce internal how-to's to facilitate cross-training team members

Required Skills

  • 4+ years of experience managing AIX servers in a Windows and/or Linux environment
  • Experience in migration from 7.2 to 7.3 and VIOS 2.2 to 3.1
  • Familiarity with pSeries AIX server models P8, P9, HMC Consoles V8, V9
  • Experience in migrating LPAR's using LPM tool.
  • Experience with server patching and upgrades to latest AIX levels.
  • Experience with NIM and other installation utilities.
  • Responsible for AIX, VIO, microcode, and firmware upgrades.
  • Familiarity with the cloud technologies is a plus like IBM cloud or Skytap.
  • Experience working on IBM sites like FLRT, ESS, Fix Central, Passport Advantage.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to a constantly changing environment.
  • Technical communication skills to gather information, report status, and record detailed task closure information.
  • Ability to work independently but also must be strong in team partnership
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.

Desired

  • Experience with AD technologies like native LDAP and Centrify.
  • Any Experience in RedHat Linux administration on RHEL8 or RedHat Clustering.
  • Experience with one or more of the following enterprise tools: Active Directory, BigFix, SolarWinds, Redhat Satellite Server, Tripwire, Networker/DDVE, SQL Server or VMware ESxi
  • Knowledge of EMC SAN based disk solutions and their configurations.
  • Should be familiar with different storage configurations like MPIO, NPIV and SSP clusters
  • Expertise in batch, bash, and/or powershell scripting
  • Knowledge of database language (most useful is SQL)
  • Experience with network administration and/or programming for troubleshooting in collaboration with wider team

Education
BS in Information Technology, Computer Science, related discipline, or equivalent.

Work Location
This position is located on-site at the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF) in Suitland, MD. Some telework permitted.

Salary
The salary range for this role is $60,000 - $174,000/year. This range is a good faith estimate based on similar roles across the organization. ERT considers several factors when extending an offer of employment, including the location, scope, and associated responsibilities of the specific position, as well as a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
