Job Description

The City of Renton's Solid Waste Section is recruiting to fill a Maintenance Services Worker 1 vacancy. This position would be a good fit for someone that enjoys being outside in all types of weather. The work requires minimal supervision and provides opportunities for training and exposure to other street related duties.

The Maintenance Services Worker performs physically labor-intensive tasks in support of an assigned section within the Public Works Maintenance division. Work is performed independently and as part of a team. Tasks are completed with general guidelines and require some independent judgment. Contribute to the City's vision, mission, and goals in the performance of all job duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Operate a variety of light equipment, trucks and hand and power tools; operate heavier vehicles and equipment under supervision.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks.
  • Utilize Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Perform traffic control duties for co-workers, other City departments and contractors as assigned.
  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.
Street and Solid Waste Section
  • Remove litter, debris, and other material on or adjacent to roadways and right of ways.
  • Install solid waste trash containers as required.
  • Manage the site operations, setup and removal of the City sponsored recycle events.
  • Assist with winter operations, including operating a small deicer unit and small flatbed sander, clean-up of sand and debris.
  • Assist in building forms, mixing, pouring and finishing concrete; assist in street, pavement construction; repair, build, and paint guardrails.
  • Assist in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair to streets.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of this classification.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Successful passing of a required background check.
  • Successful passing of a required driving record check.
  • The following certificates are required within six months of employment:
    • Flagging certificate
    • First aid and CPR certificates
  • The following certificates are required within one year of employment:
    • Confined Space/Competent Person Training
    • NIMS 100 and 700

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
  • Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Regularly lift or move items weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.
  • Bending, stretching, walking, and standing for extended periods.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work is performed within the right of way, and in high traffic conditions.
  • Exposure to high voltage wires, hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment.
  • Work evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
  • May be required to participate in a standby or on-call rotation.
  • Noise level out in the field is moderately loud and noise level in the office is moderately quiet.

Recruitment Process:
The screening process will include a review of minimum qualifications and applicants selected for an interview will be invited via email to self-schedule a time through the Government Jobs account. At minimum, this position will be subject to a standard criminal background check and professional reference check. This position requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept. of Licensing (or other state equivalent). Driving records will be evaluated based on a points system depending on the infraction and severity.
