Lam Research
United States, Oregon, Tualatin
Feb 20, 2025
The Group You'll Be A Part Of

In the Global Products Group, we are dedicated to excellence in the design and engineering ofLam's etch and deposition products. We drive innovation to ensure our cutting-edge solutionsare helping to solve the biggest challenges in the semiconductor industry.

The Impact You'll Make

As a Process Engineer at Lam, you will operate on cutting-edge technology, harnessing atomic precision, material science, and surface engineering to push technical boundaries. Your role involves developing new and advanced process formulations, defining equipment hardware to meet processing requirements, evaluating test data, and coordinating design requirements to ensure compatibility of processing methods. Your expertise and knowledge play a crucial role our customers success, making an impact on the next generation of semiconductor breakthroughs.

What You'll Do
  • Specialize in systems level thinking in product development FMEA process. Work with product engineers to develop robust FMEAs to identify hardware weak points, specifically providing system knowledge input on failure mechanisms and developing testing targeted toward validation of risk reduced designs
  • Conduct research in materials, fabrication, physics, and mechanics to drive foundational learning into design process
  • Work cross functionally with mechanical, electrical, process, and material engineers to design, setup, and conduct corner case and look ahead testing that stress key new hardware, process space, and systems to define operational limits and failure points of semiconductor processing capital equipment
  • Develop deep understanding of hardware functions and effect on wafer and use this understanding to improve test parameters, and design process recipes that stress hardware
  • Conduct detailed troubleshooting and root cause analysis to determine failure mechanisms of components, on wafer film, and systems.
  • Determine best approach for detailed failure analysis using a suite of in house and third party inspection equipment.
  • Prepare highly detailed reports, including recommendations, summarizing the failures for product engineering teams so they can incorporate foundational learning into future designs
  • Determine and document operating boundaries of process and hardware
Who We're Looking For

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Physics or related field with 6+ years of experience; or a PhD with 3+ years' experience; or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, physics, or chemistry and 8 years' experience directly in, or related to, semiconductor film deposition. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Capability and willingness to challenge assertions and designs of other engineers. Ability to contribute insightful technical ideas to other engineers' design work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in applying analytical techniques to design of experiment or method and characterization and improvement of systems
  • Strong skills and experience in problem solving, root cause analysis, and analytical techniques including problem solving methodologies
  • Ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical peers with written, verbal, and visual tools
  • Ability to interface with a multidisciplinary technical team to design quality accelerated life tests, troubleshoot on-tool failures, conduct root cause analysis, and prepare reports
  • Willingness to do hands on work
  • Experience setting up and programming data acquisition systems is preferred
  • Capability to prioritize and project manage
  • Working level knowledge of analytical inspection techniques for component study
  • Good understanding of complex capital equipment is desirable, especially related to wafer fabrication equipment.
