In this role, you will perform a variety of essential histologic and necropsy procedures, including tissue trimming, embedding, microtomy, staining, and quality control, ensuring the highest standards in specimen preparation. You will also participate in in-house training programs, maintain laboratory instruments, and support company initiatives while upholding confidentiality and safety protocols. This position requires strong attention to detail, proficiency in medical terminology, and the ability to work in a dynamic laboratory setting with exposure to biohazards, chemicals, and animal tissue. *This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range is $23 - $27/hr will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.

  • Participate in in-house training programs for the technical staff

  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Recognition of gross organs
  • Interpretation and application of medical terminology
  • Operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments
  • Preparation of study materials, solutions and stains as needed
  • Maintain and organize forms and supplies
  • Perform necropsy operations which include prosection, bone marrow smears, organ weighing, tissue checking, snap freezing tissues and identifying gross lesions
  • Perform role of necropsy supervisor if required
  • Necropsy clean-up and sanitizing
  • Perform histologic procedures pertaining to preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic analysis/evaluation
  • Trimming tissue specimens of rodents and non-rodents
  • Embedding and proper orientation of tissue specimens
  • Microtomy of tissue blocks
  • Routine Hematoxylin & Eosin staining procedures
  • Special procedures and staining as directed by protocol
  • Cover slipping
  • Quality control check of slides and documentation
  • Submission of slides to pathologist
  • Inventory, packaging, storage, and shipping of study specimens
  • Perform related duties as required or assigned by the Histology Manager

General

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Ability to read, write and understand oral and/or written instructions

Physical Activity

  • This position will require frequent walking, sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, carrying, bending, and lifting reagents, etc. up to 50lbs to a height of 5 feet, reaching while standing, gripping, and twisting hand movements, finger control and other general repetitive motions.
  • Manual dexterity to operate laboratory equipment and calculator/computer as well as prosection/grossing/embedding of small specimens, operation of microtome, and techniques required for quality slide preparation
  • Perform bending and lifting required for stocking laboratory materials, disposing/reclaiming of chemical solutions, and archiving/shipping specimens
  • Toleration of minimal odors and chemical fumes
  • Able to read and interpret animal identifications, test results, and instrument and reagent specifications

Working Conditions

  • Frequent involvement with radiant/electrical energy, solvents, grease, oil, irritants, acids, bases, and other hazardous chemicals, electro-mechanical hazards, flammable materials, and biohazards. Due to exposure to hazardous biological materials, immunization to diseases may be a required
  • Mantoux TB test with negative result is required
  • Able to wear latex or nitrile gloves, dust mask and/or respirator, and safety glasses as required.
  • Will be exposed to animal dander and/or material associated with animal husbandry
  • The noise level is usually moderate

Tools, Equipment, & Other Resources Used

  • Various software applications sustained by a Windows platform. (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Autoclaves, sterilizers, electronic scales/balances, clippers, shavers, vented hoods, and other surgical utilities (e.g., stereotaxic frames).
