Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position |
General Utility Worker performs physical labor that includes grounds upkeep, moving and hauling and setting up for special events. This position will also drive the University's sanitation truck and/or other vehicle daily to collect and remove trash, recyclables, and non-recyclable waste materials from campus facilities and grounds. |
Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
Facilities Operations is responsible for providing services relative to buildings and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, disposition of surplus property and moving and hauling. In addition Facilities Operations' expanding responsibilities include providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University's mission, goals and objectives. Maintain, improve and expand all campus buildings, campus image and educational opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, landscape design, event planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair, motor pool and housekeeping services to 126 academic buildings, ten residences and seven farm buildings. Moreover, the Small Projects Unit manages in-house all campus renovation and repair projects that do not exceed $300k. |
Work Hours |
M-F (between 6am-3pm); work overtime and alternate weekends; REQUIRED to work during adverse weather (snow, ice, other emergencies). |

Duties |
Work as a tradesman's helper, cleaning campus of debris, cleaning walks and curbs, cutting lawns, edging/trimming, pruning shrubs and trees, mulching, planting trees, shrubs, and flowers.
Remove snow and ice (adverse weather clean-up).
Move and haul furniture or other materials including chemicals and gases manually or otherwise.
Set-up and break down for special events.
Performs maintenance of grounds: seeds, fertilizes, installs fences and sign posts.
Assists with safe application of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
Operates riding mowers, farm tractors, and other grounds equipment/attachments, etc. safely.
Trash/Recycling Collection:
Drive pickup truck and utility vehicles to provide assistance with trash collection as needed.
Collect recyclable waste from buildings.
Inspect grounds and other exterior trash barrels for recyclables, sorting into specialized containers while avoiding contamination.
Dispose of recyclables at established sites around Guilford County.
Collect data (weight tickets, cost, etc.) and turns in to supervisor for reports.
Assist with trash collection by walking and policing the campus to pick up debris.
Comply with all policies and procedures regarding safety, security, emergencies and energy.
Report to work on time and in complete uniform and safety gear. |
