Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
Drives sanitation truck or other vehicle daily to collect and remove trash, recycles and non-recyclable waste materials from campus facilities and grounds. Schedules and ensures collection and removal of trash and debris immediately following major events or student activities along with timely completion and submission of associated work requests. Disposes of trash/debris within Guilford County at recycling sites, landfills sites or the incinerator and turns in appropriate receipts and other documentation. Operates and maintains other heavy motorized equipment (i.e., backhoe, chipper, street sweeper, farm tractor) as needed. Leads crew and provides assistance with grounds maintenance projects which includes the athletic arenas, moving and hauling, set up and break down for special events and activities. Uses grounds maintenance hand tools and other motorized equipment in the performance of same. Required to report for work during adverse weather to assist with emergency clean up (ice, snow storms).
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Office of Facilities is responsible for providing services relative to buildings and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, and moving and hauling. In addition, Facilities Operations has expanding responsibilities that include providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University's mission, goals and objectives. The Facilities Operations maintains, improves and expands all campus buildings, campus image and educational opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, event planning, motor pool and equipment maintenance/repair, motor fleet and housekeeping services to 40 academic buildings, 15 research buildings, 15 residence halls, 19 farm buildings and 21 support facilities. Moreover, the Grounds Department provides a maintenance program for the University's 200 acre campus, 800 acre farm, and other local off-campus properties, natural landscape features and the athletic complex. These services include sanitation, grounds care and maintenance, landscaping and moving/hauling.
Work Hours Required to work an 8-hour day between 6am-3pm M-F. Weekend rotation. Hours may vary for special events. Essential employee required to respond to campus emergencies (i.e., snow/ice storms).

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies


Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties
- Safely and skillfully operates sanitation truck with compactor, van, delivery truck and heavy motorized equipment (i.e., bulldozer, backhoe, excavator, street sweeper, farm tractor, mower) as well as motorized grounds maintenance equipment in the performance of recurring tasks with limited variety and established parameters.
- Drives safely along established campus route, sometimes working alone to empty waste bins and throw plastic garbage bags into truck; and properly disposes of trash/recyclables/debris at appropriate disposal sites. - Checks tires, oil and other fluid levels daily; makes minor adjustments; and knows when to recommend equipment be taken in for shop maintenance/repair.

- Plans and schedules the daily (and weekend) collection and removal of trash, recyclables and other debris as well as following major events and student activities.
- Consults with Grounds Supervisor to ensure appropriate crew members are scheduled to drive and/or provide assistance with trash collection and removal (daily, weekends, and immediately following special events and activities). .
- Keeps record of inventory, equipment and materials; completes work requests for trash removal; turns in appropriate documentation (receipts, etc.) after disposing of recyclables, etc.
- May mix and apply as well as supervise correct mixing and application of chemicals.
- May lead a crew and work along with a crew in the performance of grounds maintenance activities such as skilled and unskilled tasks and concurrent projects relative to the general upkeep of the University grounds, landscaping and maintenance of athletic area, moving/hauling furniture and other materials/equipment, set up and take down of equipment and preparations for special events. May monitor manual tasks such as mow grass, sow grass/fertilizer, chemical applications, police grounds, weed shrub beds. May monitor to ensure high maintenance techniques/standards equivalent to the certified standards for lawn care are applied. Insures/inspects work for compliance with plans and instructions.

Required Competency Safety and Health Compliance
Duties
-Safely operates vehicles and heavy equipment around students and facilities; aware of tight spots, close and confined areas.
-Obeys traffic laws and other established regulatory requirements.
-Ensures adherence to safety standards via safe performance of work activities and safe operation of vehicles and equipment. Attends safety training sessions and uses safety items (vests, shoes, gargles, etc.).
-Provides assistance/safety training/instructions in the correct operation of sanitation truck and other heavy motorized equipment.

Duties
Represents the department to the University public; builds positive relationship with customers; communicates and resolves issues related to event setup, moving and hauling, and the collection/removal of trash and debris.
