The Civil Practice of The Legal Aid Society is seeking an experienced and talented lawyer with a deepcommitment to public interest practice and policy to join a dedicated citywide team of managers, staffattorneys, social workers, supervisors and support personnel as a Supervising Attorney in the CivilPractice's Bronx Neighborhood Office (BNO) where they will supervise BNO's Foreclosure Prevention

and Home Equity Preservation Unit. This unit provides comprehensive legal services to homeowners andchallenges predatory lending and real estate abuses through affirmative litigation.

The Supervising Attorney will be responsible for mentoring the Unit's four attorneys (including an attorney specializing in trust and estates whose responsibilities are city-wide) and one paralegal case handler, represent LAS at coalition meetings and with elected officials, assist with grant management and development, and guide the overall direction of the Unit. The BNO Supervising Attorney will also coordinate with the Queens Neighborhood Office's Foreclosure Prevention Unit's Supervising Attorney and will provide supervision of that unit when necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

General Responsibilities



  • Supervise and mentor staff attorneys, paralegals and volunteers, including developing staff members' skills and knowledge
  • Manage on a day-to-day basis the work of staff attorneys and paralegal in the Bronx Neighborhood Office including holding weekly team meetings, conducting regular individual case reviews, reviewing legal papers, managing staffing changes, and handling staff schedules
  • Monitor and maintain a high standard of representation and client service
  • Foster and encourage teamwork and communication
  • Reinforce and maintain staff accountability
  • Assist with client representation in state and federal court proceedings
  • Develop impact and/or affirmative litigation
  • Analyze legal issues, develop legal strategy and supervise the implementation of legal strategies
  • Coordinate intake
  • Maintain a reasonable individual caseload, as time permits
  • Participate in practice-wide management discussions and decision-making and attend management trainings
  • Assist with the development, funding, and implementation of grants, including the preparation of grant reports and attending funders' meetings
  • Provide oversight of pro bono initiatives
  • Respond to client, community and staff concerns
  • Participate in citywide and statewide coalition meetings and task forces, including developing and leading new initiatives on legislative and policy matters
  • Develop and maintain community support and relationships with community-based organizations, advocates, government agencies, elected officials and the courts
  • Conduct community education, training and outreach and promote the work of the office, the foreclosure prevention practice and the Civil Practice
  • Conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours


Team Development and Supervision



  • Schedule employee hours, assign work, approve time off and remote work schedule requests following the guidance of LAS policy and procedures
  • Attend management meetings, participate in management trainings, and utilize current employment policies, practices and guidance as provided by management and Human Resources
  • Conduct management and supervision practices that affirmatively support equity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Supervise direct reports in setting performance standards, provide routine feedback as well as coaching/counseling, and issue disciplinary action as needed
  • Identify and provide training and development opportunities and ensure mandatory trainings are completed



Professional Development and other duties as assigned



  • Participate in continuous professional development
  • Continuously learn about forms of bias in the workplace and demonstrate affirmative behaviors that support an inclusive work environment
  • Other duties as assigned



QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications:



  • Admission to the NYS Bar
  • Minimum of five years of legal practice preferred
  • Experience in foreclosure prevention work, including in Supreme Court and where applicable federal court



Preferred qualifications:



  • Grant-writing and fundraising experience preferred
  • Commitment to exploring alternative approaches for legal practice
  • Ability to work in and value a collaborative team model
  • Knowledge in other practice areas within civil legal services practice a plus but not required
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required

  • Demonstrated commitment to policy advocacy and administrative reform preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in a mentorship, supervisory, or management role preferred

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary range represents a good faith estimate of the range we expect to pay for this role. The actual salary offered may vary depending on many factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range: $99,444 - $163,507
