This position will function as the lead Shop Repair Worker and supervise Shop Repair Worker I's. In addition to these supervisory duties, the position will also require coordination, planning, purchasing, maintenance and repair of small fleet, maintenance equipment and tools, and general shop management.
Work Location - This position currently works on-site only.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

- Schedule equipment activities including maintenance and tune-up.
- Maintain inventory and provide maintenance of repair records to ensure timely servicing on equipment, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Make decisions on whether equipment is repairable or should be charged back or scrapped.
- Repairs and maintains electrical and mechanical components, small engines, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment, etc.
- Work with financial staff regarding purchases, and in keeping inventory of replacement parts. Produce and assist with the preparation of contract documents and specifications for procurement process.
- Utilize computer inventory systems and related tools in performing job.
- Supervise Shop Repair Worker I's including training, mentoring, annual performance appraisals, scheduling, monitoring overtime, and disciplinary measures as required.
- Plan, schedule, and assign work to subordinates as well as other staff assigned in the shop.
- Coordinate with Shop Repair Worker I and II's from other work units or divisions to coordinate activities in the Hiawatha Maintenance Facility.
- Coordinate with field Foremen and Supervisors from the division to ensure they have the right equipment, and appropriate staffing for down time and equipment sharing.
- Train and assist staff on proper procedures for maintenance and repair of equipment. Train division staff from all street districts on the safe operation of specialized field equipment.
- Acts as the Hiawatha yard coordinator regarding equipment parking/storage, snow and ice control, etc. Manage the operation of liquid asphalt cement distribution tank in the summer, and brine making tank for winter operations.
- Coordinate with Fleet Services Division, Radio Shop and other TM&R groups to outfit new fleet trucks and fleet equipment, arrange trailer and equipment/vehicle repair and appropriate licensing, and warranty work.
- Plan and supervise the work to perform twice annual, seasonal equipment change-out, and winter maintenance and repair of all equipment and tools for all three street district offices.
- Perform inspection of completed work to ensure quality.
- Provide training to users in the proper use of equipment and tools for all three street district offices.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Vocational Technical School training in small engine repair, welding and metal cutting or equivalent degree/training. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Three years of experience performing duties related to those expected in the position. This includes small fleet repairs and shop coordination. LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: Valid Driver's License. Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position may be considered. Selection Process The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (80%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process. Background Check The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position. Drug and Alcohol Testing All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position. Medical Exam After a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass a medical examination which includes a physical screening. - Good knowledge of City of Minneapolis small vehicle and equipment
- Considerable background with vehicle/equipment maintenance requirements and intervals
- Ability to equally distribute work to maintain a constant workflow for Transportation Maintenance and Repair
- Good communication and decision-making skills.
- Working knowledge of equipment parts acquisition procedures, using computerized M-5 system.
- Experience in providing employee direction and assigning tasks, matching the right employee to the specific task to ensure efficiency.
