Job Description

The City of Renton is recruiting to fill a Network and Security Engineer 2 vacancy. This position performs technical, analytical, and professional tasks in the Network Systems work group. Some of the first projects the chosen candidate will be a part of are upgrading Wi-Fi infrastructure in City Hall and around the city in upcoming years, assisting with NAC implementation and upgrade and modernization of our video and SCADA networks. Work is performed independently and as part of a team. Tasks are completed with general guidelines and require some independent judgment. Contribute to the City's vision, mission, and goals in the performance of all job duties. This classification is part of a series and incumbents may also perform duties at the entry level.

Telework Program:
The City of Renton supports workers performing in a hybrid capacity (partial telework/in-office) where job responsibilities can be performed remotely. This position may be eligible for a telework arrangement, up to 2 days remote, based on the operational needs of the City and specific Department. Regardless of job title or telework arrangement, City of Renton employees must reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to their worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide leadership of projects to design, secure, configure, install, and maintain an integrated, resilient systems infrastructure: wired and wireless networks, cloud services, firewalls, and other security systems.

  • Provide technical guidance in the design, implementation, and operation of networked systems; coordinate systems projects including leading, scheduling, and managing system updates, changes, and problem resolution.

  • Participate in disaster recovery, and business continuity planning documentation for designated systems. Design and implement periodic tests of the plans.

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, maintain, and support various voice and data network systems, including phone systems, network switches, routers, and security appliances.

  • Partner with other IT teams in designing and providing platforms and solutions to support business needs.

  • Oversee and contribute to daily operations including appropriate documentation of City's voice/data networks and core systems environments.

  • Plan, and manage projects, coordinating with vendors, information technology staff and other stakeholders as appropriate or necessary; develop and maintain project schedules.

  • Promote cross-training and knowledge transfer between Systems staff, coordinate and provide training to users, IT Staff, and other department personnel.

  • Maintain network security consistent with the industry and City security standards, including patch and vulnerability management.

  • Review and analyze security policies and make ongoing recommendations for any necessary changes.

  • Participate and contribute to afterhours systems maintenance tasks as necessary.

  • Evaluate new network infrastructure, including the development of standard requirements for the selection process; provide recommendations for system upgrades or replacements.

  • Communicate with IT Teams, customers, and vendors throughout a project, including schedule, scope, risks, and training, implementation, and support requirements

  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.

  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individual.

  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements.

  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Security, Network Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in network engineering or related field.
  • Or minimum of 9 years of relevant education and experience
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Successful passing of a required background check and national fingerprint-based records check.
  • Successful passing of a required driving record check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
  • Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Communicate with City employees.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 40 pounds on occasion.
  • Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in a typical office environment and outdoors in all weather conditions on occasion.
  • Exposure to high voltage wires, hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment.
  • Noise level out in the field is moderately loud.
  • Noise level in the office is moderately quiet.
  • Work evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
  • May be required to participate in a standby or on-call rotation.

This position also requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept of Licensing (or other state equivalent).
