Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a responsible team player to join the Inactive Facilities Infrastructure Team. The Technician position is located at the Bettis Laboratory in the Radiological Infrastructure Operations (RIO) group. The RIO mission is to enable the Laboratory's continued growth by decontaminating and preparing legacy Cold War facilities for final demolition, clearing the way for construction of new state-of-the-art laboratories and test facilities. In this position the successful candidate will be required to perform work in an industrial environment that will include preparation and configuration of work sites to perform caretaking, decontamination, disassembly, deconstruction, and final remediation of legacy facilities.

As a team member, the candidate will be required to:



  • use detailed procedures to work with a variety of materials including radioactive, hazardous, toxic, and other regulated substances.
  • obtain qualifications and fundamental skills needed to safely perform functions associated with assigned duties.
  • have a working familiarity in the operation and maintenance of various types of equipment including, but not limited to forklifts, excavators, mobile and/or fixed cranes, yard spotters, skid steers, and waste processing equipment.
  • have experience or familiarity in conducting work in compliance with OSHA safety standards governing hazards such as elevated work, noise, confined space, silica, lead, and others.
  • Commercial Driver's License (DOT Class B), scaffold construction experience and crane and rigger certifications are a plus.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field; or
Journeyman's papers in a related field.
Preferred Skills

Experience in industrial or construction/demolition work environment.

Experience and familiarity in applying safety and environmental regulations such as:

OSHA - Elevated work, confined space, silica, excavation, lead, asbestos, LOTO, etc.

EPA/PADEP - Hazardous, toxic wastes, erosion and sedimentation controls

Heavy equipment operation and maintenance, including mechanical aptitude to conduct safety inspections and minor in-field repairs.

Experience in using specialized equipment such as torch or plasma cutting, welding (ARC, TIG, stick, stitch, etc), laser levelers, transits, atmospheric monitoring equipment, etc.

Familiarity with working to detailed procedures to specific quality parameters such as ASTM standards, OSHA requirements, technical design criteria in drawings/blueprints, etc.

Pay Range
$50,800.00 - $76,200.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guide line only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations
