Job Summary
The Enterprise Safety Director collaborates with leadership teams across the organization to support, develop, and implement safety initiatives and drive and promote a strong, effective culture of safety aligned with goals and objectives set forth by business unit safety leaders.

Primary Objectives
  • Identify, facilitate, and provide resources that enable business unit operations teams to develop and implement best-in-class safety program initiatives across all business units.
  • Advocate and support safety initiatives identified by leadership. Act as a resource for planning, organization, and development of policies and procedures.
  • Develop, coach, mentor, and act as a resource to all levels of the organization in leading and managing safety functions.
  • Provide enterprise-wide expertise and act as subject matter expert (SME) for worksite Occupational Safety and Health programs.
  • Manage the ISO 45001 program.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Identify, coordinate, facilitate and track existing and proposed safety objectives with the matrixed team embedded in each business unit.
  • Develop and document best practices which can be scaled, adjusted, and applied across business units.
  • Coordinate with business unit safety leadership to facilitate the development of policies, procedures, analytics, and tools to support site level ISO45001 certification.
  • Identify and facilitate the development, standardization, and implementation of appropriate Safety Program training.
  • Serve as Workplace Violence Prevention Program Enterprise Safety Officer.
  • Collaborate with business units to perform location risk assessments, identify critical Environment Health and Safety(EHS) hazards, and assist with development of operationally specific Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) plans to mitigate risks.
  • Develop, monitor, an report on appropriate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for EHS goals and initiatives.
  • Research, recommend, and implement Safety recognition programs to incentivize adoption of a zero-incident EHS culture for employees at all levels.
  • Monitor corporate and business unit compliance and provide reporting on related with local, state, and federal Health and Safety regulations including but not limited to DOT, OSHA, CAL OSHA, NFPA, and ISO 45001.
  • Research and provide reporting and recommendations on new and developing regulations and guidelines regarding workplace health, safety, and violence prevention.
  • Identify resources and track participation in required safety and environmental training.
  • Facilitate the development of appropriate processes, procedures and tools to conduct safety incident root cause analysis, CAPA plans, follow through on action items.
  • Prepare and present regular, insightful, reports to senior management on safety programs, initiatives, challenges, opportunities, and impacts on operational performance.
  • Provide assistance in emergency situations as requested.
  • Serve as the Safety Officer during events which require an Incident Command or Unified Command as necessary.
  • Assist with documentation and implementation of changes in the safety program.
  • Drive recognition and awareness of corporate safety philosophy, programs, and achievements both internally and externally. Represent the company at speaking engagements, industry meetings, and community events.
  • Direct, guide, and influence continuous improvement initiatives taking into account new and existing regulatory standards, and operational requirements.
  • Work with the relevant business units to develop, maintain, and update business impact analysis reports, business recovery plans, and maintain logistics, contact management, and emergency communications systems and processes.
  • Provide enterprise-wide visibility of safety status and compliance. Coordinate corporate services and cross-functional operational groups to develop and implement policies and procedures to meet multiple external security requirements including cyber and operational security.
  • Act as Company representative on various safety boards and counsels and communicate activities and developments to the broader enterprise as part of the ongoing support of the safety culture.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in business, occupational safety, industrial and construction management, logistics, general industry related major, or equivalent combination of coursework and experience in a directly related field required
  • Master's degree strongly preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid state-issued driver license and acceptable driving record required
  • Transportation Worker Identity Credential (TWIC) required
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire date preferred
  • ISO9001 and ISO45001 or OHSAS18001 Internal Auditor certification or equivalent experience in other quality systems preferred
Work Experience
  • 10+ years of related corporate safety experience or related logistics or transportation industry experience with progressively increasing levels of responsibility required
  • Previous supervisory experience required
  • Experience working with unionized workforce required
  • Formal Six Sigma training (Green or Black Belt), LEAN, or equivalent continuous improvement certification or equivalent experience preferred
  • Business Continuity, Emergency Management, or equivalent disaster and continuity experience preferred
  • Previous experience with Signal Mutual and proven success at implementing a safety program with LTIFR experience preferred
  • Terminal operations, PCMSC safety, and ILWU experience preferred
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of environmental and industrial health an safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of transportation, warehousing, and maritime industry operations, business models, and related regulations.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal health and safety regulations (OSHA, CAL OSHA, DOT, etc.)
  • Knowledge of General Industry regulations (OSHA, CAL OSHA, ANSII, NIOSH, EPA, etc.)
  • In-depth knowledge of safety management systems and best practices.
  • Demonstrated success in leading program management efforts in the development and implementation of technical and operational solutions.
  • Strong business acumen with highly developed professional communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to present and conduct training to large groups.
  • Excellent communication, leadership management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by example and influence decisions at senior levels of the organization.
  • Proven ability to identify critical issues, prioritize appropriately, and execute quickly.

Working Environment
This role requires work that may involve the following environmental conditions:
  • Corporate office environment
  • Vessel and terminal environment - includes moving, shifting surfaces, and active production areas including moving vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
Travel
30% Must be able to travel independently to U.S. locations including Hawaii.

Starting pay will be determined by job-related factors including experience, education, and business needs and may be modified at any time.

Zone 2: $180,000 - $220,000
This job is also eligible for participation in an Incentive Plan with a target payout based on eligible compensation and corporate/individual performance goal attainment.
Annual Incentive Opportunity: 20% of eligible compensation
