Role description

The Global Practice Group (GPG) Business Development Head is a senior member of the Central Services Marketing and Business Development (MBD) team at Norton Rose Fulbright. The GPG Business Development Head is responsible for supporting the Global Leader of the firm's Litigation and Disputes GPG with the achievement of GPG business development objectives.

Reporting lines

The GPG Business Development Head reports to the GPG Leader for Litigation and Disputes, the Global Head of Business Development and the Chief Marketing Officer in their home region. The GPG Business Development Head works in close cooperation with other members of the Central Services MBD team, the regional MBD litigation leads and their practice heads and others in the regional MBD teams.

Role components

Strategy and expanding global connectivity

  • Strategic direction: Together with the Global Practice Leader, and regional practice heads to develop an over-arching plan for the GPG which connects various regional teams' initiatives and fosters a spirit of collaboration among the regions to help achieve the Firm's key objectives
  • Work with regional leads to identify multi-regional and cross-border work opportunities
  • Prioritize and promote awareness of specific initiatives to support cross-border work
  • Host calls/meetings to bring together and engage GPG and share progress on priority initiatives
  • Increase awareness of GPG's capabilities within the firm

Client Development

  • Engagement in client development programs: working in conjunction with regional MBD Client teams, drive the engagement of the GPGs in the firm's regional client programs, focusing on select and achievable client wins
  • Client development initiatives: assist with the implementation of GPG client development initiatives and campaigns as appropriate

Business planning and reporting

  • Annual business plans: assist the GPG Leaders in the development, implementation and tracking of annual business plans for the GPG and promote these plans across the regions
  • Financial information: work with the Central business information team to ensure that the GPG Leaders have ready access to accurate financial performance and client data
  • Reporting: draft GPG performance reports for review by GPG Leaders

Bids and panel appointments

  • Strategic bids: work with the relevant bids team on strategic cross-border GPG bids, including advising on the bid approach, team formations and reviewing and editing content
  • Panel appointments: assist the GPG Leader in the analysis of panel-related opportunities and help drive the realization of these opportunities

Internal communications and meetings

  • Communications: assist the GPG Leaders with GPG-wide internal communications, working with the Central MBD internal communications team
  • Athena: oversee the updating of the GPG Athena pages, ensuring that all GPG information is up-to-date and relevant, working with the Central MBD internal communications team
  • Meetings and events: support the GPG Leaders with the formulation of GPG meetings and events and Global Away Days

External communications and events

  • Events: work with regional leads to discuss and agree on target conferences that are most beneficial for the GPG as a whole and share ROI outcomes
  • Rankings: work with regional leads to identify key global rankings and ratings for the group to pursue and work with regional leads to put a strategy in place
  • Brand messaging: work with the Central MBD communications team to ensure all communications channels convey consistent GPG brand messaging and capability presentation (including but not limited to website, marketing collateral, bids, experience statements, directories, league tables, CVs)
  • Marketing collateral: lead the development of high-quality materials for use in marketing collateral to convey GPG positioning, experience and sales messages to clients, working with the Central MBD Communications team; ensure, for consistent messaging and capability presentation, that this content is replicated in appropriate systems and all communications channels
  • Website and other digital platforms: lead the development of the GPG website pages, ensuring that all GPG information is up-to-date and relevant, working with the Central MBD website team
  • PR: work with the Verein MBD communications team to develop the media profile of the GPGs through media outreach and campaigns
  • Directories and league tables: lead the process for GPG submissions to global directories and league tables, working with regional GPG MBD Heads

Skills and experience required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, preferably with a focus in marketing or communications
  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience working in a legal and/or professional services environment
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of business development strategy in a global professional services organization
  • Experience of delivering cross-border business development and marketing campaigns using the full marketing mix, working with international business development staff
  • Proactive, business development professional who can lead activity
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Strong written, editorial and oral communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Confident, persuasive and assertive - understands when to act and when to ask for further clarification
  • Experience of client liaison - ability to be client facing
  • Understands the need and has the ability to manage expectations
  • Sound working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint and Excel
