Accredited by AACSB International, the Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte offers outstanding business education programs in a variety of disciplines. The College enrolls more than 5,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs in Accounting, Business Analytics, Economics, Finance, International Business, Management, MIS, Marketing, and Operations. The College employs more than 100 full-time faculty members and 50 permanent staff. The Belk College of Business Dean's Office provides leadership and management of the College.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Dean of Finance and Personnel provides leadership for all business, financial, and personnel activities of the Belk College of Business. The Assistant Dean has overall accountability for planning and directing the strategic and long-range financial goals of the College. As a direct report of the Dean, this position develops key processes in the College and is responsible for the reporting of all financial information to both internal and external stakeholders. The Assistant Dean serves as the College's primary liaison with Academic Affairs, Business Affairs, Human Resources, Advancement, Internal Audit, and Research & Economic Development. The position serves as an expert resource on College and University financial policies, and provides consultation for College personnel issues.

The Assistant Dean of Finance and Personnel leads Dean's Office initiatives to improve management procedures, policies, and financial planning. The Assistant Dean serves as a resource on personnel policies and procedures for supervisor within the College. This role directly supervises five full-time staff positions on the College's Finance and Personnel Team. Planning, directing and coordinating the efforts of the Finance and Personnel team is an essential part of this position.
Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Dean of Finance and Personnel is responsible for Belk College's $28M+ annual operating budget, as well as the allocation of specific resources and investments across the College in support of strategic goals. This position oversees short and long-term financial planning to achieve the College's strategic goals.
  • Responsible for budget reporting of dynamic funding sources, including state, trust, discretionary, endowed funds, and external grants.
  • Responsible for year-end solvency and the appropriate commitment of funds. The Assistant Dean uses diverse platforms and software to validate, analyze, and report on dynamic data to generate current financial reporting for the Dean, Associate Deans, and other College leaders.
  • Provides expert knowledge on financial matters to all College constituents and proactively offers best practice solutions when faced with multiple funding options.
  • The Assistant Dean of Finance and Personnel serves in a full supervisory role for the five full-time permanent SHRA staff on the Finance and Personnel Team, including

    • Oversight and delegation of assignments and responsibilities
    • Development and implementation of work plans and performance reviews (STAKES)
    • Support and promotion of professional development and training for all team members
    • Oversight for onboarding and ongoing training for direct reports



  • Serves as a key member of the College's administrative leadership team and participates in regular Dean's Council meetings.
  • Works both independently and in collaboration with other College leaders and staff to resolve conflicts while working within College and University policies, guidelines, and expectations.
  • Provides leadership in making recommendations on strategic personnel actions, including position modifications, salary adjustments, and recruitment of vacant positions.
  • Trusted and independent decision maker, providing strategic input into the annual budget proposal process in support of the development of the annual budget, assessing revenue projections, and analyzing spending needed to support strategic goals.
  • Represents the College as a liaison with Academic Affairs, Business Affairs, Human Resources, and other college and unit administrative leaders across campus on financial and personnel matters.
  • Responsible for developing new processes to ensure consistent application of fiscally sound and equitable policies throughout all business units and to ensure all are working efficiently.
  • Provides effective leadership to achieve organized fiscal processes in support of College administrators, budget owners, and the Finance/Personnel Team.
  • Supports financial reporting for the College's specialized accreditation (AACSB) and is responsible for the College's University-wide financial reporting.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's degree or
  • Bachelor's with equivalent experience and
  • Five years of experience in financial and personnel management.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Master's degree in Business Administration or a related area from an AACSB-accredited program
  • Experience with financial and personnel management in higher education
  • Experience with faculty position management
  • Extensive knowledge of North Carolina and UNC System Office policies and procedures relevant to this position
  • Prior experience in a supervisory role
  • Prior experience working with executive-level management
