Position Purpose
To design and implement a comprehensive, best-in-class physical preparation framework to enhance athletic performance, reduce injury risk, and sustain a culture of championship habits and behaviors within the daily training environment, in close collaboration with the head football coach. This includes supervising and mentoring assigned staff while planning, coaching, administering, and programming within NCAA, Ivy League, and institutional standards. Reporting to the Executive Associate Athletics Director for Peak Performance, the Director of Football Performance will collaborate seamlessly with the Director of Strength & Conditioning for Olympic Sports and the broader Dartmouth Peak Performance (DP2) team, leveraging interdisciplinary expertise to provide holistic support for student-athletes' health, wellness, and development-empowering them to excel both on and off the field. While football will be the primary focus of this position, support may extend to other varsity teams based on the needs of the department.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Bachelor's Degree in exercise science or a related field or the equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant football strength and conditioning experience, preferably at the collegiate or professional level.
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.) by NSCA or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) by CSCCA.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Effective leadership ability and strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Enthusiastic and creative motivational ability.
  • Proficient in teaching and coaching all aspects of collegiate strength and conditioning programs to athletes of various training ages and backgrounds.
  • Prior experience designing comprehensive physical training programs for football players, including reconditioning and return to performance programming for injured athletes.
  • Skilled in monitoring training and performance using validated assessments and instruments.
  • A learning orientation in all areas of sports performance and ability to implement programming at the direction of other service area leaders (e.g., nutrition).
  • Proficient computer, organizational, and administrative skills.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in exercise science or a related field preferred.

Description
Program Development

  • Collaborates with the head football coach to implement a comprehensive training philosophy and system, including planning, scheduling, session leadership, and individual/team goal setting.
  • Designs and delivers year-round training programs-including strength, power, speed, agility, energy system development, coordination, flexibility, and mobility-to maximize athletic performance, minimize injury risk, and build resilient football players.
  • Provides oversight and guidance for support provided by strength and conditioning assistants and interns with football responsibilities.
  • Participates in the selection, training and supervision of strength and conditioning staff members, interns and student workers.
  • Stays abreast with the scientific literature and performance landscape to maintain training systems and processes in line with industry best practices.
  • Partners with other practitioners, including athletic trainers, dietitians, physicians, physical therapists, mental health clinicians, and mental performance practitioners to deliver holistic care.
  • Actively contributes as a core member of the DP2 team, fostering holistic health, wellness, and development and an exceptional student-athlete experience.

Education, Training and Evaluation

  • Collaborates with DP2 to offer comprehensive education addressing health, performance, and physical development from the weight room to lifestyle behaviors during their time at Dartmouth.
  • Provides introductory and progressive instruction and coaching to allow student-athletes to safely participate in strength and conditioning programs and reap the greatest benefits from their efforts.
  • Implements and maintains regular testing and athlete monitoring protocols to evaluate progress and refine programming to optimize individual and team performance.

Communication & Program Support

  • Documents training and testing to monitor progress and inform the training process.
  • Prepares and shares regular reports with coaches and practitioners that provide actionable insights on individual and team performance, progress, and needs.
  • Actively participates in football program discussions on processes and decision-making, offering expertise and strategic feedback to advance the team's competitive edge.
  • Supports the head football coach by cultivating a training environment that aligns with and reinforces the program's core values and behaviors.

Description
Facility Scheduling and Management

  • Assists with the scheduling, maintenance, supervision and oversight of the varsity weight room.
  • Works with the Athletic Facilities Office to schedule spaces for team training sessions.
  • Enforces adherence to weight room policies and procedures for use and risk management of all training facilities. Ensures adherence to safety, cleanliness and security standards and procedures.
