The Laboratory Mechanic performs work comparable to that of a journeyman level in the design, fabrication, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of general laboratory equipment and machine tools in support of the institution's animal facilities directly or indirectly managed by Biologic Resources Laboratory (BRL). The Laboratory Mechanic works with all the other UIC trades in one capacity or another, as well as with investigators, technicians, animal care staff, contractors, service representatives, and veterinarians, to support the institution's animal-based research/animal care and use program. Duties & Responsibilities:
Minimum Qualifications Required: 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the categories below: A. Successful completion of a machinist apprentice (or a closely related program) in an approved training program or in a training program established by an employer served by the State Universities Civil Service System. B. Work experience comparable to that performed at the Assistant Laboratory Mechanic level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility. C. Coursework in welding, electrical/electronics, HVAC, industrial technology machining or manufacturing or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
