The Laboratory Mechanic performs work comparable to that of a journeyman level in the design, fabrication, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of general laboratory equipment and machine tools in support of the institution's animal facilities directly or indirectly managed by Biologic Resources Laboratory (BRL). The Laboratory Mechanic works with all the other UIC trades in one capacity or another, as well as with investigators, technicians, animal care staff, contractors, service representatives, and veterinarians, to support the institution's animal-based research/animal care and use program. Duties & Responsibilities: Designs, fabricates, installs and repairs fencing, animal cages, accessories and racks, animal enrichment toys, hoods, and automatic low pressure watering system. Performs work with a journeyman degree of skill in making, replacing or repairing parts of cage wash machines and pressure washers, floor scrubbers, including but not limited to pumps, shaft, and bearings. Performs various types of welding such as oxygen-Acetylene, welding, cutting, and brazing, shielded metal arc (stick), Gas Tungsten Arc (TIG) and soldering. Performs work with a journeyman degree of skill in making and repairing of surgery and laboratory equipment, restraint devices, operating tables, hydraulic equipment and lifts, etc. Common building repairs including doors, bumpers, etc. and preventative maintenance of low-pressure watering systems, pressure washers, hydraulic equipment and cage wash equipment. Performs sheet metal work including measures, makes and installs fabricated work including feeders, perches, etc. and assists in the selection, purchase, installation, testing and maintenance of equipment. Provides support for satellite facilities and research staff by making and repairing instruments and equipment and performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Required: 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the categories below: A. Successful completion of a machinist apprentice (or a closely related program) in an approved training program or in a training program established by an employer served by the State Universities Civil Service System. B. Work experience comparable to that performed at the Assistant Laboratory Mechanic level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility. C. Coursework in welding, electrical/electronics, HVAC, industrial technology machining or manufacturing or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months) 60 semester hours (or an Associate's degree) equals two (2) years (24 months) Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of materials (e.g., metals) and of machines and tools, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance. Knowledge of math concepts and applications, including algebra, trigonometry, and geometry. Skilled in performing maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed. Skilled at determining causes of operating errors and troubleshooting such errors. Skill and ability to perform necessary maintenance and repair on laboratory equipment. Ability to install equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications and to operate such equipment. Ability to work with common commercial alloys and plastics including aluminum and stainless steel. Ability to effectively communicate information verbally and in writing so that others can understand. Ability to read and understand written instructions, interpret maintenance manuals, schematics, drawings, sketches, and diagrams of systems involving mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic devices, and ability to produce simple sketches for production purposes.
