What your job will be like:
The Scientific Data and Computing Department Head will lead the current Nuclear Physics (NP) focused portfolio and will work with the Data Science department and the High-Performance Data Facility (HPDF) team to enhance and expand that portfolio into other mission areas. The Scientific Data and Computing Department Head will have technical research and development scope relating to data hardware and software solutions for the NPprogram and HPDF project. They will also act as the Jefferson Lab lead forIntegrated Research Infrastructure (IRI), establishing IRI scope and serving as an interface between HPDF and the IRI program and applying HPDF and IRI related technologies to NP data and computing.

In this role you will:


  • Develop and lead a forward-looking R&D and operations program to provide scientific data and computing resources for the nuclear physics program.
  • Develop the Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program for Jefferson Lab, in the context of the wider IRI effort. Engage with relevant committees, reviews, and projects. Ensure that the HPDF project and IRI program goals are aligned.
  • Interface with, and provide guidance to, the laboratory staff and outside partners developing technical data storage and catalog solutions for HPDF.
  • Support the CIO with projects and assignments related to scientific data and computing.
  • Maintain relationships with other leaders at the DOE program offices as well as other outside institutions and laboratories.
  • Complete project activities on time and within budget.
  • Present research through presentations at conferences and workshops, and through publications.
  • Maintain knowledge about trends in computing in the broader physics community including ASCR, HEP and other NP Facilities.
  • Provide leadership for significant R&D programs with considerable latitude to set directions of these programs.
  • Provide guidance to find solutions to technical problems.

Qualifications We Require:
Education:


  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or Physics.
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science or Physics, preferred.
  • Relevant experience may not be substituted for education.

Experience:


  • 12 or more years' experience in a government funded research environment.
  • 10 or moreyears' experience managing data and computing research and operations.
  • Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Proven ability to lead computational projects and programs at a DOE national laboratory.
  • Demonstrable in-depth familiarity with computing for the EIC program and with the DOE IRI program.
  • Demonstrable experience with large scale computation and storage systems.
  • Ability to produce results in a collaborative, flexible culture and communicate clearly and consistently to various stakeholders.
  • Effectively negotiate with external agencies, senior management and others.
  • Ability to manage budgets and allocate resources in resource constrained environment.
