The San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) Division of the University of California, San Francisco Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences is seeking a generalist obstetrics and gynecology physician to provide clinical care at SFGH as an Assistant or Associate Professor. Our division's mission is to promote and advance quality, just, and equitable reproductive health and health care services; train the next generation of reproductive health leaders; and improve national and global policy and practice through research and scholarship. The SFGH division is the largest of the divisions in the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and includes 17 physicians, 12 certified nurse-midwives, 18 PhD researchers, 2 family planning fellows, and over 100 staff.

As the public hospital for the City and County of San Francisco, SFGH is the county's only Level 1 trauma center. The majority of physicians at SFGH are also UCSF faculty, while the majority of staff are employed by the Department of Public Health. SFGH provides the main source of primary and specialty care for uninsured, publicly insured, and some privately insured residents of San Francisco. Our obstetrics and gynecology patients are predominantly from the neighborhoods surrounding the hospital. In the Family Birth Center and the Obstetrics, Midwifery and Gynecology clinic approximately 61% of our patients identify as Hispanic/Latinx, 13% as Black, 8% as Asian, and 9% as white. In the Special Procedures and Abortion Clinic patients come from longer distances and diverse geographic regions. Because of prior structural barriers to accessing to healthcare services, many of the patients we see are medically and/or psychosocially complex.

Clinically, the SFGH division provides full-scope obstetrics and gynecology services at San Francisco General Hospital, including obstetrics, gynecologic surgery, outpatient sexual and reproductive health services, and tertiary abortion services. Our physician faculty members are generalists, and many have completed fellowship training or are subspecialists in a variety of fields, such as Complex Family Planning, Reproductive Infectious Disease, Female Pelvic Medicine, and Advanced Research. Some sub-specialty services, such as Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, are provided by our partner physicians from other UCSF Ob-Gyn divisions. Our hospital's Level III Community Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is staffed by UCSF neonatologists. We have a strong commitment to providing trauma-informed care in all of our clinical areas.

The SFGH Family Birth Center (FBC) provides full-scope antepartum, labor and delivery, and postpartum care to all patients served through SFGH and its network of 13 community clinics, Mission Neighborhood Health Center (our San Francisco Consortium Clinic partner), and patients who are incarcerated at the San Francisco County Jail. The FBC is currently a level IV maternal care unit with its safety supported by services offered within San Francisco's only trauma hospital. We attend approximately 1,200 births per year. The FBC is staffed by UCSF faculty (MDs and CNMs), CNMs employed by the Department of Public Health, UCSF OBGYN and Family and Community Medicine (FCM) residents, and additional faculty FCM attendings. Our midwifery service provides 24/7 independent midwifery care with physicians available for consultation, including prenatal care, and is a strong part of our culture of supporting physiologic birth and providing medical intervention only when truly necessary. As a result, the FBC is one of the top 10 hospitals in California in terms of a high VBAC success rate and low cesarean delivery rate. The FBC also was San Francisco's first Baby-Friendly hospital.

The Obstetrics, Midwifery, and Gynecology (OMG) Clinic is busy, full-service, multidisciplinary ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology practice, providing a broad range of clinical services. We provide full-scope ob-gyn care, with specialists providing Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Gynecologic Oncology, Urogynecology, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, Complex Family Planning and Maternal Fetal Medicine care, and general ob-gyns providing generalist care, including focused clinical care in their interest areas. The clinic is staffed by UCSF faculty (MD and CNM), DPH CNMs, and UCSF Ob/Gyn residents as well as residents from other disciplines such as Family and Community Medicine and Internal Medicine and we have 22,000 patient visits per year. Our division is home to HIVE, which since 1989, has provided wrap-around outpatient preconception and prenatal care to individuals and couples affected by HIV and works to advance sexual and reproductive wellness for all people and communities affected by HIV in San Francisco and beyond. Since 2005, all babies born in San Francisco have been free of HIV. It is also home to Team Lily, a multidisciplinary care team providing person-centered, trauma-informed, wrap-around services to pregnant and postpartum people experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, incarceration, intimate partner violence, and/or mental illness.

The Gynecology service offers the latest in surgical technology with most minimally invasive surgical options. Our UCSF partners in Gynecologic Oncology, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, and Urogynecology also operate at our site as well. We do more than 300 surgeries each year. SFGH has a large number of surgical subspecialties, including Urology, Interventional Radiology, Neurosurgery, and Vascular Surgery, and we are fortunate to get to collaborate with these specialties often in patient care.

The Special Procedures and Abortion Clinic is the abortion clinic within San Francisco General Hospital. Our mission is to provide high-quality abortion care, conduct research to advance knowledge and practice, and train the next generation of abortion providers. The Special Procedures and Abortion Clinic sees 1,200 patients per year, from the Bay Area, elsewhere in California, and other states, and is one of the largest referral centers in Northern California. About one-third of Special Procedures and Abortion Clinic patients identify as Hispanic/Latinx, one-third as Black, 11% as Asian, and 19% as white. We are proud of the unique contributions of our physician, nurse and counseling teams, whose work is guided by the values of teamwork, respect and excellence. Our approach to abortion counseling is humanistic, patient-centered, and trauma-informed and is a nationally and internationally recognized program.

Our equity, inclusion, anti-racism and structural change work, under the leadership of Jasmine Powell, Director, and Biftu Mengesha and Ana Delgado, co-directors of Anti-racism, Equity and Inclusion, has included: division-wide trainings in communication across differences; the development and implementation of clinical tools to support patient-centered and equitable clinical care; expectations and support for equitable hiring practices; work to expand professional development, research support, mentorship and leadership opportunities for staff; a pilot survey to facilitate learning, self-reflection, and conversations with respect to anti-racism among supervisors of UC staff; and strategic work, centering our global partners, to promote ethical and equitable global partnerships. Our division's leadership has embarked on group coaching to address the complex intersections of race, historical trauma, social inequality and justice, and the impact of these factors on health and societal outcomes, and to create tangible change within the division. In collaboration with the Solid Start Initiative we have also recruited our first Community Accountability Board, designed to honor the wisdom and lived experiences of members of the community we serve, as a link to our clinical, research, and administrative groups.

We are one of two core educational sites for UCSF OBGYN residents, hosting about one-third of the 40 residents at any given time throughout the academic year. All division faculty participate in clinical teaching, didactic teaching, and mentorship of both students and residents. The SFGH division at UCSF is proudly also the home to the Complex Family Planning fellowship, and was the first fellowship site nationally. Our division also participates in interprofessional education with nursing and midwifery students. The SFGH Division includes the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health, a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists, clinicians and staff who conduct critical work in research, education and policy in family planning, maternal health, reproductive infectious diseases and global health. The Bixby Center's mission is to integrate research, training, clinical care, and advocacy to advance reproductive autonomy, equitable and compassionate care, and reproductive and sexual health worldwide. The research and clinical interests of our faculty are broad and share a common theme of advancing the reproductive health of marginalized patients. The Assistant/Associate Professor would be a member of the Bixby Center as well as the division.

The Assistant/Associate Professor in the Clinical, HS Clinical or Adjunct series will provide general obstetrical and gynecological care at SFGH. They will also have the opportunity to do the following:

• Build/refine surgical skills under the supervision of senior surgeons. Develop a clinical niche and or lead multidisciplinary care in areas such as vulvar skin diseases, pelvic pain, office urogynecology, menopausal care, or cancer survivor follow-up.
• Hold a role in medical education such as residency site director or medical student site director.
• Support equity efforts in our division.
• Train and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows.
• Participate in research and/or creative activities consistent with the SFGH OBGYN or Bixby Center missions. Examples could include advocacy projects, curricular development and evaluation, research, and quality improvement efforts.

Required qualifications:

• Completion of medical school and residency at accredited programs,
• Board eligibility or certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology,
• Commitment to advancing health equity and/or diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism,
• Commitment to interdisciplinary clinical care and collaboration,
• Excellent communication skills,
• Commitment to caring for patients from populations that have been marginalized and oppressed, and
• Evidence of high-quality teaching, mentorship, leadership, scholarly productivity, and/or quality improvement initiatives.

We highly prefer a candidate with an interest and experience in medical education and in caring for underserved patients from diverse backgrounds, with a focus on health equity. Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred but not required. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $127,000-$197,600. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
